Anyone here from Winnipeg - Manitoba?

Hi
Myself and my husband are moving to Winnipeg in September, looking for a better quality of life. Obviously we are both really nervous about moving. We are both 22 years old, but have been working since we left school at 16, so we have plenty of work experience. I was just wondering about child care in Canada. We plan to have children in a year or two, provided you have been working at a company for a year or two, do you recieve maternity pay, as you would in the UK?
I have lots more questions only someone from the 'Peg could answer, so would appreciate it if someone out there would like to become 'pen pals!' (And I know how cold it gets out there...it's just a dream of ours to live in Canada).

Thanks!

Winnipeg is a very nice city to live and it's very nice to see the seasons change... The winter is very cold but when the springs came you can see flowers everywhere, the summer is hot and the days are very long the sun sets at 10PM, in the autumn is very nice to see the colors of the trees...
I am not so sure but I think you have 1 year of pay maternity .
The cost of living here in winnipeg is cheap if you compare to others big cities in canada.
Winnipeg is a multicultural city and you will be very welcome here.

Canada is possibly the best place you could move to on this earth when it comes to health care and quality of life, as for Winnipeg specifically I cant tell you much as I am from Ontario but I hope you like the big switch from tightly populated UK areas to very deserted Winnipeg:P

Hi,

I'm from Winnipeg. The job market isn't saturated right now, so it shouldn't be too hard to find work, depending on what you're looking for.
We have maternity/paternity leave, so either parent can take time off to take care of a new child. In order to qualify, you must show that weekly earnings have decreased by more than 40% and you have accumulated 600 insured hours in the last 52 weeks. I included a link at the bottom so you could get more information about maternity benefits.
Winnipeg is one of the colder places to move to, so far as capital cities go. The absolute temperature gets down to -35 C, and with the windchill just last week it was -51C. That kind of weather usually only lasts a couple of weeks, and you get acclimated to the cold pretty quickly. A friend of mine recently moved here from the UK and she walks to work everyday, and has no problems with the cold.
Winnipeg is also a fairly inexpensive city to live in, though the monthly average cost of child care is $395.

Hey there!
