What is living in Winnipeg like?

What is living in Winnipeg like?

Winnipeg has ample, free, live entertainment in the summer months. The people are the best! Food is #1 - great restaurants, great prices and lots of shopping.

Housing - I don't believe there is cheaper housing anywhere. I live in a decent neighbour - 850 sq ft. 2 br bungalow - the cost less than $100,000 - my house payments are less than rent.

It's beautifully treed divided by two rivers. You sure notice the seasons here. Spring (although initially a little dusty and dirty) comes on really fast. Summer - definately beach time - hot, hot, hot. Fall - my favourite - amazing colours, cooler temperatures, very comfortable. Winter - not so great - but even when it's -40 the sky is blue and the sun is shining.
We're a city with a small town feel.

Most of the crimes in the city are gang related (gangs hitting other gangs) or domestic related. If you don't hang around them you don't have much problems. Unfortunately car theft is a problem here - so make sure you have a club and/or a car alarm. Every city has problems though.

I've lived in Winnipeg all of my life except 3 years in California - I couldn't wait to get back to Winnipeg. The sky is still blue here - not browny grey. And hey, we're the Slurpee capital of the world!

I've thrown in some sites which may be helpful.

Let me say right off the top that I would not want to live there. And only because I spent many years on the prairies and now want something different.

That aside, I know many people whe live there now or who have lived there...and loved Winnipeg. They were not crazy about the cold, but they had great friends, there are many cultural things to do, etc.

It's true that the winters in Winnipeg can be severe by most people's standards. Going down to -40 or below is not unusual. However, most people get used to it. You learn how to dress, how to look after your car, and you find things to do in the winter. Great city for cross-country skiing, for example.

Winnipeg has a lot of things going for it that you won't find in other cities of similar size, because it is a regional centre. It's the biggest city for miles around. So, you get a symphony, a 1st class ballet company, a good music scene. Winnipeg also has a diverse ethnic community, exemplified by the summer Folklorama festival. Kind of like a mini-world's fair, with lots of good ethnic food, music and dance. It also means lots of good ethnic restaurants.

Winnipeg has a thriving Ukrainian community - they even have schools with Ukrainian language programs. And the best perogies in Canada will be found in Winnipeg!

The people are friendly, the cost of living is reasonable. It can be a great place to live.

Winnipeg is great....Minus 40 temperatures happen...possibly 10 days a year, on the average. easy to adapt to it. As far as "Drag Racer"'s answer....in his question and in this answer, he seems to focus on Hookers and Bikers.
While there are hookers in Winnipeg, they are concentrated in the rather SEEDY areas (which are few and far between).
Bikers usually leave One alone, if One leaves them alone, unless One conducts "Business" with them.
You can stay in Winnipeg for 6 months and not see a hooker, or biker, unless you seek them out, for Business purposes.
If so, you are compounding the "Alleged" problem, and perhaps should wear "Bullet proof" shorts.

Living in Winnipeg is pretty laid back. There is the excitement of concerts, hockey games, festivals etc if you want to attend. If you are more of a homebody, you can do that too. Homes aren't as expensive as some places, like Vancouver. Utilities and groceries etc are also pretty middle of the line.

Is it cold? Yeah, it can be. If you dress appropriately, winter can be one of the most beautiful seasons too. Are there mosquitoes? Yeah, but they don't pick up small children and eat them like in some areas of the country. (be a tree planter in northern BC and you will wonder what Winnipeg fusses about) Transit could be better, but its not too bad. Traffic isn't as bad as long as you aren't a maniac and don't drive safe.

Think of Winnipeg as the middle class city of Canada and you get an idea of it all.

ive travelled there last summer to go camping and well i assume that there is fish !! lol

I've lived here my whole life & love it. There is so much to do, not just in the city & surrounding it to. Practically every weekend during the summer has something going on. We have amazing restaurants & interesting neighbourhoods. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

It was the worst 6 months of my life. Cold, expensive, dirty and just not nice. When my husband got fired and we were able to move back to Calgary if was the best thing in the world. You would have to kill me before I would live there again.

Winnipeg is one of the cheapest place in the world to live, very low taxes rate.
The weather can be wild, in the winter it can be
-50C to 35C in the summer.
Check Winnipeg official website for more information.

cold in winter hot in summer to many mosquitoes not much to do but watch the grass grow to many bikers and hookers they are every where which means the crime rate is very high so you need to wear bullet proof shorts the homeless live in the downtown area so theres 10 bums every yard they are even in the lobby of the fancy hotels downtown other than that its not such a bad place
