Considering moving to Wellington?

My job is offering me another job up in Wellington. (I live in nelson). It will pay me more up there so I was wondering about the good areas and bad areas of the city. Also I have two children so they will need schools. I have been to Wellington many times, but I need a local view on it. What's the best area to live in?

I still might not be moving for about another year but just in advance.

Thanks

What type of area are you looking for? Private Schools or Public? Also depends on the price.

If you want to be close to the city i would say Brooklyn or Island Bay. Both are more family oriented and villagey than some suburbs in Wellington.

Karori - fine. Used to have the largest primary school in the country but not sure it still is.

Tawa - also fine. Personally I like Tawa for families. It is less than 15 mins by train into Wellington but has well regarded primary intermediate and high schools. Also quite a range of properties (eg 300,000 or 700,000).

Further out - plimmerton is lovely. In fact, you can see the SI from Plimmerton. Actually you can see it from many places around Wellington. Plimmerton has lovely little primary schools. No secondary though.

You know my suggestion - go to the British Expats website. The reason I suggest that site is because a lot of the people on it are contemplating moving, particularly to wellington and they often go into detail about various areas. It could be quite helpful for you.

Hay! I live in Wellington! Your pic looks like mine! Let's be buddies.lol

I live in Mount Victoria. That's pretty cool area. The hutt valley and porirua is pretty dog

I'm moving to Wellington on the 17th Feb next year.

Nice Areas-

Seatoun
Miramar
Strathmore
Wadestown
Churton Park
Khandalla
Oriental Bay

Not so nice-

Wainuiamata
Parts of Karori
Tawa
Newlands

Sorry I'm not a local view but I have friends that live there.

Hi, I was born and bred in Wellington lol.. Wellington is great has a great family yet vibrant feel about it. Not too populated like Auckland and Christchurch yet it has many amenities close to hand. One of the best things about Wellington are all the beachs ..

Good parts
* Whitby (flash suburb 30 min drive from town)
* Island and Lyall Bay (both beach suburbs)
* Thorndon (if you want close to town .. inner city living)
*Johnsonville
* Seatoun (lovely seaside community)
* Oriental bay (located 5 min from town by the beach .. fantastic views) although very pricey

Not so good areas

*Porirua (a bit dangerous)
* Newtown (also alot of trouble)

avoid those 2 areas and you should be fine!

Good luck for your family ;-)

by the way hope u will support our new A league soccer team the phoniex!!
