Best and safest area to live in/near Washington DC?

I'm looking for a very safe, clean appartment complex with appts for rent. Something in a more up-scale neighbourhood, but not more than $1000/month. Also something near the Metro/with access to public transportation.

I know nothing of DC at this point:) Appreciate any ideas, suggestions, links, tips on housing, renting, stuff to read, relocation info etc...

Hi,
I am sending you a link for a local paper. Look at Tenleytown, Adams Morgan and places around American University and Georgetown University. I would stay away from Petworth area.
Check out craigslist.org
I was able to negotiate my lease down by $200/month because I signed for one year.

If you're looking at something in a "more up-scale" neighborhood," expect to pay well over $1000. Many professionals take in roommates to live in the very safe and clean areas. Rockville and Bethesda are great places to live and are right on the metro lines. pretty much every place is right on the metro line in the DC area, but I'd definitely check to see about room mates to get as far away as possible from the bad areas of DC.

The good, safe places to live in DC are very expensive.
Crystal City in Arlington VA is a great place to live that has a Metro stop that will take you anyplace in DC.
Crystal City has abundant restaurants, and a shopping ctr that is underground. It is just over the 14th St bridge from DC.

I live in Germantown, MD. Not as upscale as Bethesda or Rockville but nice enough. Shady Grove metro is about a 15 minute car ride.

You can probably find a one-bedroom for around $1,000. I pay $1,214 for a two-bedroom, one bath.
