Is Washington D.C. in the North or in the South?

Is Washington D.C. in the North or in the South?

"Washington is a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm." -- John F. Kennedy

Washing DC has always been part of the North.

It is between Maryland and Virginia.

During the Civil War, it was affiliated with the Union, being the capitol of said Union.

But it is south of the Mason Dixon line, which traditionally separated south from North.

I have lived here half my life, and half my life in the north (PA, MA, NY, NJ, CT) and it feels southern to me.

Technically, it does lie below the Mason-Dixon line so it is in the South. People living in the DC area are really more mid-Atlantic rather than North or South.

The site for the new federal city--what we now know as Washington, DC, was proposed by George Washington as a compromise location. The northern states wanted it in the north, the southern states wanted it in the south.

The location was further south than the northern states preferred, but the location was part of a deal where the new federal government would assume the debts of the states, which would benefit the north more than the south, so the northern states went along with the selection.

Both Maryland and Virginia contributed territory for the new city. The part that Virginia contributed, now known as Arlington and Alexandria, was eventually returned to Virginia. The part contributed by Maryland became what is now known as Washington, DC.

That's a long way to say that Washington, DC is neither in the north or in the south, but in the middle.

Culturally, Washington, DC was considered part of the south until about the time of World War II. Since then, it's culturally been considered more of a northern city.

I am born & raised in the Washington DC Area and we consider it to be more southern.

To us, Baltimore Resembles more of a Northern City than DC Does and if you ask people in areas south of DC, They will tell you that DC is the top of the south. Plus DC is below the mason-dixon line which means Baltimore is Really the first southern city.

i consider it northern

geographically it is south and most of the Real washingtonians are a little bit southern. But it has in practice always been a northern place. the Mason Dixon line is way north of DC in Md, so its really a toss up
