What are some good, affordable,safe places to live if you work in downtown dc and have kids?

Arlington, VA, is right across the river and is a great place for families. Arlington is like a small town, but a city, too, and it's only 5 minutes to downtown DC. It's safe, and the schools are terrific--but not so inexpensive, depending on the sort of home you're looking for.

I live on Capitol Hill, a wonderful neighborhood for families and children that is a 10 minute walk from downtown. However, it isn't cheap.

You might consider Brookland, which is just a few stops up the red line in northeast DC and a bit more affordable, but still expensive: see http://www.geocities.com/brooklanddc/

But you're asking for good for kids, affordable, and close to downtown. You can't have all three: If it's affordable and close, it will not be good for kids. If it's close and good for kids, it will be expensive. And if it's good for kids and affordable, it will be far out in the suburbs.
