Which is the most important university in Washington ?

I'm assuming you mean Washington D.C.

As far as importance, that's a really hard question to answer. D.C. has some of the best universities in the world. I would not be surprised to see people say Georgetown University. Georgetown is one of the oldest, and perhaps one of the best universities out there.

However, D.C. also is home to George Washington University, Catholic University (where i go) which is the only university in the USA specifically sponsored by the Vatican. You also have Howard University which is one of the oldest historically African American colleges. Plus, the University of the District of Columbia, and American University which has a great foreign policy school are all located in the city. There are ten's of satellite campuses in the DC proper and all of them are from important university's.

Pengun gave you a good list. I'd generally agree that Georgetown is the most highly-respected of the group, followed by George Washington University. Of course, each school has its own strengths.

On the outskirts of Washington are two other very good schools: the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Both are about a half hour drive from Washington proper.
