Is a green card sufficient for proof of citizenship when flying from Virgin Islands to NY?

I have a green card for US and they are looking for proof of citizenship and that's all I have.

Your green card is exactly what you need. If you are flying from the U.S .Virgin Islands, you actually do not need proof of citizenship or permanent residence...you just need a photo I.D. If you are flying from the British Virgin Islands, you need your green card...but you should always have it with you anyway.

You can travel to the US Virgin Island, Puerto Rico or any other territory of the USA with just your green card. It's like traveling state to state.

However, green card is proof of RESIDENCE
that's why its full official name is Permanent Resident Card

When one is still holding a green card, their passport's issue country is STILL their citizenship (nationality) proof.

One doesn't become a US citizen not until they take the neutralization exam after being 5 years green card holder.

So maybe, staying on the safe side of the game, just bring your passport too.
