Recommendations for nice hotels in Venice?

I'm taking my husband to venice for his birthday at the start of April... and have been looking at hotels in Venice. There are so many I don't know where to start and reviews on tripadvisor etc seem so mixed!

Can anyone recommend a NICE hotel (4 stars +) within walking distance of St Marks that is suitable for a romantic getaway?

I think the best hotels in Venice are *Palazzo Bonvecchiati (yeah it is round the corner from San Marco square and 5 minutes from Rialto - I pass in front of it every morning), the *Hotel Danieli (most known and surely one of the most expensive in Venice!), *Hotel Gritti Palace (another 4+ stars very nice one), *Hotel Monaco and Gran Canal (in front of Harry's Bar), *Hotel Al Ponte dei Sospiri (nice one close to San Marco and the Bridge of Sighs), *Hotel Metropole, *Hotel Savoia and Jolanda (I think it's maybe ten minutes from San Marco, but you just have to walk straight ahead, easy), *Hotel Don脿 Palace...

We have so many I couldn't give you much of a recommendation. Anyhow, I think the most characteristic one is the Danieli (there are two buildings, insist for the older one, much more typical) but even Palace Bonvecchiati is nice.
All 4 stars and up hotels are pretty much the same talking about distance from Saint Mark (San Marco) and prettiness.

Editing: Oh yeah, all the ones I mentioned are in Venice, not islands as Lido, Burano, Murano or in the mainland (Mestre).
They're all pretty big and (in my opinion) faboulos Hotels... I don't think you would complain at all with any of them.
Anyhow any other information I can look up or I could know, feel free to ask =)
... well, again, Cipriani is great too! Not exactly next to Saint Mark's though. It's in front of it, on Giudecca Island (look up for a map and you'll see - there are vaporettos (Zitelle stop if I'm right) to get there and probably something like a private boat for the hotel, not sure)
*Molino Stucky is another great one, part of the Hilton's, same ad Cipriani in front of Saint Mark's (exactly in front of 'Zattere', you can again take a boat).

The hotel site I use for booking here in Italy is venere.com: http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/#. I usually don't stay overnight in Venice because I live two hours away. However, I do stay in the San Marco area for events like Carnevale and Il Redentore every year.

You can narrow down the search on Venere to a specific part of the city and then sort by # of *s, price, guest rating, or other criteria.

One that I would highly recommend is the Selvadego: http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/san_m... It's literally less than a minute from the front door to Piazza San Marco. Very nice rooms. This is an annex to the Monaco and Grand Canal Hotel - breakfast is served there (about a three minute walk). The breakfast room overlooks the Grand Canal. I was most recently at the Selvadego two weekends ago for Carnevale.

The only one that i would recommend and i know is of high standard with no complaints from any customers is the BONVECCHIATI or the PALACE BONVECCHIATI. It is a 4-5* and only round the corner from St Marks Square and Venice Theatre. The rooms come in Economy, standard,classic and superior.4km from the Airport.
When you look for hotels in Venice you must ask for Venice Island as this is central,if you just ask for Venice some travelagents do not know the difference!
My boss went there in November for a surprise for his wife and he said it was fantastic.
We book many people to that hotel all year as it is of a higher standard and fantastic location.
