Are there any supermarkets in Venice? |
Does anyone know if there are any supermarkets in Venice, (preferably near St Mark's Square)? It would make a change from eating at a restaurant every night when we go there later this year. Yes, there are small and medium supermarkets everywhere at town. They sell food & household articles, or clothes. Anyway, you can by food in groceries, fruit and vegetable shops too. Good question. I was there last year and can honestly say that I do not recall seeing any. Mmmmmm...... interesting. No real supermarkets because there's not enough room on the island, but there are several small markets and bakeries around. If you take the train off the island to the town of Mestre you'll find a supermarket which won't be as costly as the shops on the island! No real supermarkets because people there shop for their food daily. Just small stores. The open air market at Rialto is fairly close to Piazza San Marco - there are stalls with fruit and vegetables Monday - Saturday in the mornings until noon. I often stop there or at another market closer to the train station when I go to Venice for the day. There are other open air markets and lots of little shops in Venice as others have mentioned. You can also pick up panini or bruschetta at several shops or bars in the vicinity. Yes, there are some supermarkets (small supermarkets) and I remember seeing one close to San Marco. Just ask when you're there. When I saw this question I almost answered No! but then I remembered seeing a couple of medium sized grocery stores when I last visited (October) but the usual shopping in Venice are in small speciality shops. That is the joy of Venice itself. Finding a little shop that specializes in cheeses, a salami deli, a wine shoppe, and a bakery. There we go instant meal. Careful though . Venice is not like other Italian cities there aren't a lot of parks to picnic in. In fact the city is going to be crowded. Guaranteed. oh, your question is important! if i'm not wrong you cannot eat around venice or you are fined... check it out... I am Italian and have been to Italy three times....in many different locations. Of course there are supermarkets. We Italians need to eat too! LOL Cheers felpa, you've listed some I've never seen.. there are several supermarkets in Venice. Not very many around the SM Square. You'll have to walk on down to Castello (Via Garibaldi) and you find one or two. The biggest might be the Billa - one on Strada Nuova between Rialto and the train station and one next to San Basiglio at the end of the Zattere. |
