How has the pollution affected the city of venice, italy?

first good asnwer gets the points

The air pollution has damaged many outdoor buildings and artifacts.

The Four Horses of San Marco, which had stood outside (both in Venice and in France, then back in Venice) since the 4th Century, had to be brought inside because of damage from acid rain. (The ones that you see now are replicas.)

The canals are basically sewers.

To elaborate on what tonalc1 stated, there are no smog laws in Italy, so the damages to the marble structures are immense and always under restoration, especially in Rome where vehicles are very close to marble structures, especially down town. As for Venice, no cars means smog isn't their largest concern. The city recently started charging every tourist and other visitor one Euro for the duration of their stay on top of their general expenses to pay for restoration.
