Tunisia (North African, Muslim country) has BANNED Islamic headscarf, how wrong is this?

Ok, well Tunisia has a large tourist industry therefore, tourists can do as they please dress BAD and drink alcohol, is it me or is this wrong, as the country (govt) believes if you wear headscarf (hijab) your extreme..this issue has not been made in the media so i want to know opinions of muslims and non muslims ?

Tunisia is a Muslim country, 98% thats why i find it a big wrong...

It is really wrong. It restricts the freedom of people. Why do they pretend respecting freedom and refuse it when it comes to Islam. How do they judge!!!!!

It's OK with me..why do you assume it is wrong

umm, it is restricted, not banned. just like in France. you can wear it, just not at a public school or public office jobs.

Like Nutty said, it is restricted and not banned, and that restriction only applys to government offices (supposed to apply to schools as well, but people in the schools still wear it).

The reason I do not believe it is wrong is because while yes, Tunisia IS a Muslim country, he constitution is set up like America and Europe - with a clear calling in the preamble for "a democracy founded on the sovereignty of the people, characterized by a stable political system, and based on the principle of the separation of powers."

Article 7 state: "The citizens exercise the plenitude of their rights in the forms and conditions established by the law. The exercise of these rights cannot be limited except by a law enacted for the protection of others, the respect for the public order, the national defense, the development of the economy, and social progress."

While in some peoples opinion the restriction of the headscarf is wrong, under Tunisian law it is considered social progress.

As for tourists, most do not dress "bad". Most dress and act very respectable when outside of their hotel.

And as for he drinking, do you know that every city has at least one local bar? Even the cities that do not have tourists. Tunisians like to drink alcohol just as much as anyone else. I could give more examples of how Tunisians as a whole act more westernized, but that would be adding details that could spark a debate or other questions being asked, and I'm trying to just stick to the question at hand.

In summary, I don't think the restriction is a bad thing. To each his own.
