Can an American take their car to Tunisia?

shipping? price? how? any ideas? thanks!

You can definately ship your car to Tunisia. It will be shipped by boat and usually takes about 1-2 weeks. The price of the shipping will vary from company to company, and will depend on the make, model, and year of your car. Please be advised that in order to ship your car, you must own your car out right; they will not accept cars that are still under a lease.

Once you get to Tunisia there will be some things for you to consider.

The first is are you going to register it as a resident or non resident car. If you register it as a resident car, you must pay all taxes on it upon arrival (again the price will be determined based on make, model, and year of your car). If you register it as a non resident car, you avoid the taxes, but will have a hard time selling it should you ever decide to do so, because it means that you will either have to pay the taxes on it before selling it (taxes would be in the amount they were when you first brought the car into country), or you would have to sell it to another non-resident.

Another thing you have to be careful of is that there are not many mechanics that know how to deal with American made cars, or many auto supply stores that carry parts for American made cars. The only popular American cars over here are a select number of Fords (mainly Escorts and Ranfers), Chevrolets (under a different name than in America), and I have seen less than a handful of Dodge Rams.

The American Embassy has a listing of cars for sale (used, but most are under 5 years old) and they are pretty reasonable in price. Some are non-resident cars, so watch for that. This is a very good option if you want to save some money on transportation and import charges.

If you have any more questions, or if I can be of any more assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Car shippers all over US. Go to Yahoo Search, Google, etc

But if your car is amphibian, why you need to ship it. lol

Hi Nuttybut... Good morning to all of you,
Yes American or any foreigner, non resident, can brink his car or his furniture or any personal effect (temporary admission) you will only need the assistance of a transit company to clear them.
So you have to contact several shipping companies to give you their offers, then you choose the suitable one.
The other option is to buy a car in Tunisia or in Europe(tax free) and sell it before your departure, especially if the shipping fares are high.

Yes, u can take ur car to Tunisia. U'll have to ship it from Miami or New York. It can take up to 40 days to get there although they'll tell u that it'd take only 21 days.
It will cost u around $1300 to ship it.
However, if u r planning to stay in Tunisia, u can buy a car there. A small car that's 4 years old would cost around $7000.
I hope I could help.
later
