What currency should I take to Tunisia ? I am going to Skanes on holiday soon.?

I am going to take mastercard as back up but would like to know what currency should I take as would feel happier taking some cash. Also are there any cash points in Skanes , and what is the level of fraud out there - should I be ubercareful?

Just have to state something first: Skanes is in Monastir, and I live in Monastir. If you need suggestons on places to eat that are good, or good coffee houses, just let me know!

Ok, now on with my answer:

Any currency is convertible - in certain places.

English pounds, US Dollars, and Euros will be the lost widely accepted at banks, hotels, and the change counter at the airports.

In my opinion, it would be best to bring Euros.

Just a quick note: Tunisia is one of the few places in the world where you will get a better exchange rate at most hotels than you will a bank. Keep that in mind when you are changing your money.

Tunisian currency is not a fully convertible currency as of yet, so therefore it can only be purchased inside of Tunisia.

Travelers鈥?checks and credit cards are accepted at some establishments in Tunisia, mainly in urban or tourist areas. The Tunisian dinar is not yet a fully convertible currency and Tunisian law prohibits the export or import of Tunisian bank notes or coins. Tunisian law permits the export of foreign currency that was declared when entering Tunisia. Tourists are expected to make foreign exchange transactions at authorized banks or dealers and to retain receipts for dinars obtained. Under foreign currency regulations, a tourist can reconvert to foreign currency 30 percent of what has been exchanged into dinars, up to a maximum of 100 dollars. Declaring foreign currency on entering Tunisia and obtaining a receipt for dinars purchased thereafter will facilitate reconverting dinars to your original currency. Keep all receipts of monetary transactions for presentation when leaving the country.

Now that the government part is over, there are cash points (ATMs) all over Tunisia, mainly in touristicy areas, and at banks. I personally wouldn't bring travelers checkes as it will take a long time for them to process it when you check out because not many people use them. Really the only place that they are valuable at is a bank.

And because Tunisia is still a developing country, most places aren't set up to accept credit cards or debit cards. You'll find that only you're major stores, such as Carefour (in Tunis), and Monoprix, and Magasin General, plus a few major restauraunts are equipped to handle them. Most major hotels can handle them as well.

Or bring a credit/debit card and use it at the ATM's when you need money. There is a fee for using the ATM's though, and that varies from bank to bank. Mostly the fee is between 1,500 dinars and 2 dinars. Remember though, you also get charged a fee from your bank for having to convert your normal currency into local currency. You will have to check with your bank/credit card provider to find out how much that fee would be.

My best suggestion to you is to bring the amount of money you want to have and change it little by little when you are in Tunisia. Which ever way you go, keep only the necessary cash on you, and the rest in your hotel room.

If I can be of any more help, feel free to contact me.

Denars, 2 Denars= 拢1,,,

You can't go wrong with US Dollars, they are accepted the world over. If you are worried about security, take some GBP or USD traveller's cheques, or a pre-paid card (most of the travel agents and the post office now do them) - that way, you will be protected if you get robbed or your cheques get lost, as in both cases your money can be replaced easily.

DON'T TAKE TUNISIAN DINARS - it is illegal to take the local currency in and out of the country. Source (http://www.swiftfxtransfer.com/import_ex...

There is an ATM locator on VISA's website at: http://www.visaeurope.com/personal/finda...

Hope this helps

you cannot take tunisian curency in or out of the country i would take travellers checks in either pounds or euros,we went to skanes i wouldnt like to use the cash machines(but i didnt see any)everyone looks dodgy

tunisia is dinahs, or deenahs however you speel it!!! you can buy it is this country but you cant take it out the country! (it used to be like that)

I you take some $, you'll be charged to buy it and charged again to change your $ to dinars. A lot of Tunisians people live in France and Italy therefore, I would think Euro could be good to start with, but if you can get some travellercheque, it might even be better.

You can't take Tunisian money in or out of the country! It's illegal I'm afraid! However if you ask your travel agent for locations of ATM's you can get money out that way. Usually thay can give you a map with there locations shown. If you really want to have cash - for the airport etc, take American Dollars these are accepted in Tunisia. Good luck.

it is true you cannot take tunisian dinar in or out of tunisia. there are lots of cash machines in shopping centres etc. if you are english and are taking cash there to change into dinars they do not accept 拢5 notes. i went twice last year so i know. although i did not see crime like pickpocketing etc you will get hassled a lot to buy from people in souks (like market places) and the people who sell things know hello in every language lol. oh and do not pay the first price they ask. haggle them down or you will pay well over the odds

Not every language! Yes these men can be a pain but all they are trying to do is make a living. If you really want confuse them just pretend you do not understand. They will try every language they know but will give up if you say you are Welsh! It works honest!

As usual they love English Notes but not fivers! Skanes Good Beaches not far from Sousse & other interesting places to visit as regards crime,Don`t flash the cash.Dinar is the currency.

Take Euros. US Dollars are accepted too.

i think you can take pretty much any currency there and they will change it into dinars there, (because as mentioned by many it is illegal to take it out of the country) i have been to Tunisia a few times and going again in July, i recommend you change money as you need it (i change it every morning in the hotel) because if you change loads and left with a lot of dinars at the end you wont get a lot for your money.
anyway enjoy Tunisia its a great place :)
p.s. i agree with graham87, i am welsh and wen me and my friend cant be bothered being pesters by the locals we just talk welsh to each other and they soon get the hint, in fact most of them have never even heard of wales wen u tell them anyway lol

They will switch over the money when you get there! Don't worry about it now, also just for the record. Not all places in Tunisia take our money! But there are several places to exchange it.
