Monastir airport serves the largest number of charter tourists to Tunisia. The airport is effective, not too big and placed a short journey from both Sousse and Monastir. This is probably the best point of arrival in Tunisia, the airport has all facilities, and you will be out on the road or on the beach in as short time as possible. Monastir airport has a nice selection of car rental companies, and prices vary a lot.

Customs is the hardest part to get through since there are usually a lot of passengers at any given time and only a limited number of customs officers working. After going through customs, you will find yourself at baggage claim. There are plenty of clearly marked signs telling you which carousal your baggage will be coming in on. And for a small fee (usually 1 or 2 TDN) you can have someone help you with your luggage.

The airport itself is very easy to navigate. All check-in desks are located on the ground floor and toward the west side of the building, while departure gates are on the second, or top floor. All arrivals come in on the ground floor from the east side of the building.

Outside the airport there are plenty of yellow (normal) taxis, white (tourist) taxis, and luages ready to take you to your destination. If your hotel has provided transportation for you, or you are traveling with a tour company, this is also where you will meet up with your bus.

I hope this helped. My husband is a pilot working out of Monastir airport, so if you need anything more specific, feel free to contact me.

I've landed at the Monastir airport two times and the best way I can describe it upon landing is chaotic! Both times there were loads of people piled on top of each other waiting to go through customs. The first time wasn't so bad because I was allowed to go outside and smoke with the security people (which was supposedly "not allowed"), but the second time I had to stay inside and it was awful. It took forever to get through the lines, and it was very, very hot inside.

Once through customs, though, it's an easy airport to navigate since it's quite small. You will find many taxi drivers waiting just outside the doors.
