Island of Djerba, Tunisia?

thinking of going there on holiday, anybody been there, what's it like, what are the best places there.

Djerba is a very lovely island situated in the south-east of Tunisia on the Gulf of Gabes. It is a very popular tourist hot spot because of it's leisurely pace of life, and it's pristine, clear Sea and warm sandy beaches.

To enter Tunisia, no visas are necessary for travelers from Western Europe, Japan, U.S.A. and Canada unless you will be staying longer than 4 months.

It is best to travel to Djerba in spring or autumn. In summer, the island teems with tourists.

The currency used in Tunisia is the dinar - one US dollar is worth1.25 dinar. Tunisia is one of the few countries in the world where hotels give a better exchange rate than the banks.

To tour the island, taxis are metered and very reasonable; buses and shared taxis (louages) connect all towns and villages; tour companies offer excursions; autos can be rented - small ones for about 75 dinars per day, fully insured; but the best way to relish Djerba's atmosphere is to hire a bicycle - the island is flat and very easy to navigate.

Hotels on the island are very reasonably priced. A good hotel to stay in on Djerba is Hotel Melia Djerba Menzel - cost for double room from 40. - 90 TND, depending on season.

Try Tunisian food. It's very tasty. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... Also, Djerba is noted for its fresh seafood dishes. One will not be disappointed when dining on these fruits of the sea.

There is less crime in Tunisia than in Western Europe or North America, but beware of pick- pockets, especially in crowded trains, buses and souks.

When taking tours, make sure the guide speaks English. If you do not ask, French will be the language spoken.

Tunisia is the most sophisticated, relaxed and tolerant state in North Africa. Women travelers are very safe when traveling alone.

With the exception of its capital, Tunis, Tunisia is geared up for tourism. The most up-to-date touristic facilities are found in all its resorts.

The Mos Eisley exterior sequences from Star Wars were filmed on the island of Djerba.

Djerba is a flat island (614 sq.km, highest elevation 55 m) situated east of the southern coast of Tunesia about 100 km north of the Libyan border. Djerba is connected to the mainland by a 6 km causeway built on a Roman foundation. The approx. 150,000 inhabitants of this island of mythology are mostly of Berber origin.

Djerba has suffered from an uncounted number of invasions (Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Norman, Italians, French, Spanish, etc), the most recent one being the invasion of tourists. Tourism has become the principal source of income, before fishing, farming, pottery and the weaving of wool. Despite the boom of tourism, Djerba has kept its flair which you can experience if you are avoiding the beaches and going into the island.

If you are planning to visit Djerba you may be interested in having a quick look at several photos of Djerba and the neighboring Tunisian mainland. hi jack, get alife m8. djerba brill. red hot lovely people mint island.

BE CAREFUL!!!!

We booked to go there this year, but after reading reviews on www.tripadvisor.co.uk cancelled our booking. This year was the first time that UK tourists have been able to visit in the mainstream (i.e. offered by high street tour operators) and the write ups and reveiws are appalling!

They almost ignore Uk tousrsists as they do not speak any Eneglish and give preferential treatmne to German, Italian and French as they can communicate with them. I also read that the star rating is very different with their 4 start being the same as our 2/3 start.

Hope the link helps!

hotels are good don't stray out on your own, likely to get mugged.

what's wrong with you Matt? That island lives out of tourists money. How can you claim that they IGNORE you? It's true that English speackers aren't that many but let's acknowledge that Brits don't come that often either. Germans are world champions in travelling and that's a fact. It is normal that local population tend to learn their language. Plus, French is Tunisians first language (after native Arabic). Nothing to do with French people. I personally think that they suck.
What i'm trying to say is: We have nothing against you. You're all Welcome.
To answer the Question, I'll say that due to its closeness to the desert, Jerba is warmer than any other coastal city in Tunisia. There can be perfect summer weather until October or maybe November.
