Has anyone travelled from Singapore to Bangkok by train? If so, any tips?

I'm thinking sometime I would like to fly into Singapore and travel all the way up to Bangkok by train. I do have questions. About how much should the total train cost be if I were to go 2nd class all the way? How much time should I give myself to go to Bangkok (is 10 days to 2 weeks enough time)? Also, any general tips?

Thanks!!!

I do believe this journey is in three stages,
First is Singapore to KL.
Second is KL to Butterworth.
Third is Butterworth to Bangkok.

Last time I checked the price for the total journey was around $70 aud.

To do the journey in one go is around 48 hours for the 2000 odd kilometers.

My advice is hop on hop off and see more as you go,

That is a great trip that I shall be taking on one of my future trips.

there are several ways of doing it.
1. thru the east coast of m'sia.
s'pore - tumpat - sg. kolok - bangkok.
2. the luxurious way by E&O express. check their website.

3. thru the west coast of m'sia.
i experienced this but i took it from kuala lumpur (KL). i suggest you break your journey to break the boredome due to long journey. mind you that the malaysian railway is very very famous for their delays. this is what i would suggest:
1. s'pore-kl (3 trains daily @ hrs 0730, 1300, 2215), 7-8 hrs journey. fare: SGD35 (day) SGD30 (nite seat) SGD38 (nite bed). spend 2 - 3 days in kl - interesting city.
2. kl-butterworth (in penang) (3 trains daily @ hrs 0845, 1430, 2100), 7-8 hrs journey. fare: RM35 (day) RM32 (nite seat) RM38 (nite bed). worth spending 1 -2 days in penang.
3. b'worth-bangkok (1 train daily @ hrs1315, 21 - 22 hrs). fare: RM112. i suggest you break your journey and take the opportunity to visit hatyai and hua hin on the way to bangkok. but the fare would be different.
this way, you will see more of m'sia & thailand.

alternatively:
1. s'pore-b'worth (1 train daily @ 0730, 14-15 hrs journey, SGD55)
spend a day or two in penang and hop on the international train to bangkok.

2. s'pore-kl, kl-hatyai (thailand) (1 train daily @ hrs 2100, 14-15 hrs journey) fare: RM44 (seat) RM52 (bed). spend a few days in hatyai, visit krabi. there are a number of thai local trains from hatyai to bangkok and other destinations like hua hin, trang, kanchaburi, surathani - these are among tourists destinations in thailand.

note:
don't expect too much from the malaysian railway. comfortable but maintenance and cleanliness are poor - the coach looks good from the outside only. the thai trains are better maintained and cleaner and more comfortable.
fares quoted for 2nd class.

i dont know where u come from but i hope you can do your own conversion from s'pore and m'sia currencies to your own currency.

I think watching paint dry might be a more entertaining pursuit...
