Is it worth hiring a can in phuket?

I wont to hire a car without a driver is it worth it, I looked at hiring a motorbike but people told me not to due to no insurance.
If its worth hiring can some point me to a good hire place, I am staying Karon beach.
What a good price for a day in Baht...
Thanks Everyone.
Matt

Well, is different opinions that many people will give it too you..for my opinion i'd suggest you to get use too with the place and better don't hire the bike or the scooter. If you want to hire the car its depend how far do you want to go and can you make sure that you will be able to get back to your place which mean you don't get lost somewhere.

The price if you talk about this moment will be a bit more expensive coz this period is high season.

I think generally all the car rental company they will provide you the insurance but you need to ask before for this info.

This is the most important thing you must be aware about local driving especially in Phuket even they have the traffic light it doesn't mean anything for them if they want to go they just go. In the evening let say around 60% of the rider (motorbike) will never put the helmet on........

I think the best way is your choice but remember the other thing you better ask for bargain i don't want to say much but your money will worth with bargain..

Sorry for long answer.

Hi there buddy,

I strongly advise you not to hire a car in Phuket becuae of the dangers of their non existant traffic laws.

If you are staying outside of a city then it maybe ok but just remember that a lot of thieves target tourist cars.

Public transport is safer and nicer to use.

Speaking of expeirence.

Hope that is of help!

I would say no, unless you have driven here before. It's not worth the cost and the hassle Your on vacation to enjoy yourself not to worry about where to park and the way Thai drive is another topic. So take a tuk tuk or taxi to where you want to go, in the long run it may be cheaper.

I don't see the need. You can get to any point on the island using some form of public or paid transportation.

You are looking at 2000-3000 baht to hire a car. If you get into an accident with a local, then you as a farang will be held responsible. It looks like more trouble than its worth.

If anything I would hire a scooter by the hour.

no.
roads r up and down u kno slopes n such it's very dangerous esp. when rainin
+ reckless drivers

Really not worth it.

Taxis and tuk tuks are very cheap
Thai drivers are not the safest in the world
Some roads leave a lot to be desired, especially after rain

As for motorbikes - definitely a no-no. Dodgy vehicles, non-existent helmets

So I would say no!

Enjoy Phuket - it's a lovely island! Karon beach is lovely but try Kata Beach too!

Heya Matt-

Good question. I personally would rent a motorcycle at a daily rate of 250 - 500 baht per day, but that is just my preference. The no insurance thing is no big deal unless you tend to drive drunk or are accident prone.

Car rentals are not quite as expensive as you might think. There are several car rental places at the airport in Phuket. You will likely spend a couple hundred baht to get to your resort from the airport without a rental. Some hotels do have a free transfer service, so make sure you know if your resort does or not.

You can get a small economy car for as little as 999 baht a day. But I would go far a 5 passenger job to make sure I have enough room for my bags and so on, and you can do that for 1500 - 1700 baht per day. They discount it considerably if you rent for 7 or more days. (like 200 baht per day). I think you can even get a Daihatsu for 600 baht a day. I might be leery of renting a car for 600 baht a day, but they do come that cheap. Yes, the Thais drive crazy, BUT, make sure you drive on the correct side of the road, and be careful and you should not have too many problems.

Personally I'd just rent a motorcycle, they are more fun, but if you want to explore the island at all, and it is well worth exploring, then go ahead and rent a car.

Finally, your credit card may have free rental insurance if you use it to rent a car. I don't know of any CC that would insure a motorcycle though.

Sorry for the long answer, but I hope it helps.
