Is it safe to buy gold in a gold shop in Thailand, I bought some gold and I took it to a shop in the states?

even though they said it was real due to its color you could not sell it for what it is worth in the USA.

It is relatively safe to buy gold in Thailand, provided you buy it from a well established gold shop, and it is generally better than 95% pure gold. Fancy necklaces and bracelets with lots of small pieces are best avoided as they will contain far more lead and other impurities, and they are more difficult to test for purity outside of Thailand. So buy it in big chunks.

Gold in Thailand is sold at a little over the currently quoted price on the world gold markets and unless the gold price increases it won't be worth any more in the USA than it is in Thailand, unless there is taxation somewhere down the line in which case you could be in trouble with your inland revenue people.

yea but you can buy it for a lot cheaper than in the states! Go to yararat brand stores

gold in thailand is really good quality.

If you don't know anything about precious metals you could get scammed!

Same, same for purchasing gems, if you don't know what you are doing you could get scammed!

By any chance were you encouraged to buy some gold by a tuk-tuk driver or some person you met on the street? If so, these are common scam techniques!

Just like the touts at the airport with expensive rides into town, they do provide rides (much higher than what you can get at the taxi sign up desk and meter fare.) Gold and gems touts look for "customers" just walking around. Many tuk-tuk drivers are part of this swindle - new visitors to Thailand are encouraged by the drivers (often for a free or reduced price ride) to visit certain stores and shops that are willing to sell you something of lesser value but at a higher price.

BUYER BEWARE! If it sounds too good it probably is!

Yes it is as long as you don't buy it from some guy on the street who is asking less then to going rate for gold here.

If you go to Thailand and go to the red and gold jewlery stores, they sell Baht gold, also at the malls.

Thais use a unique unit of measurement for weighing gold, the "baht" which is precisely 15.244 grams before the gold is worked or 15.16 grams after. Most gold shops will display on their windows the current buying and selling price of a "baht" of gold bullion of 96.5% purity or 23 Karot.

The price of a baht of gold is pegged twice a day. Currently its 14400 baht/$ 32.45 or $443.76 (US) for about 1/2 oz. Make sure you ask for baht gold because they also have 20k 18k and down to 10k. Also they have fake but in general the red and gold gold shops are checked by the government and usually OK.

Oh and if you don't have a friend don't by gems everybodies getting scammed on that deal.

Very safe to buy gold here. It is easily converted to cash. Most families have a few gold baht that when they trade for cash in case of emergency.

There are no tax considerations for buying jewelry that appreciates in value.

Its safe aslong as you go to the proper Thai gold shops that have the prices clearly marked..(they go off gold price) but whats the point..it's gonnna cost you about the same the world over....the only thing about THai gold that it has a diiferent finish to other countries...it's not really the smooth shiny gold its more of goldy gold if ya know what I mean...
A good necklace might cost you $300 US back home same necklace might cost you $295 so not much diff... gold price is gold price you cant really barter like ya buying a pair of jeans from KaoSan Road.. good luck
