I want to Ride elephants in Phuket, whats the best?

So im going to Phuket next month and want to ride elephants, a tour or jurney of somesort. I want them to treat the animals well, i couldnt handeal seeing any bad treatment of them!
what do you recomend?

Well normally the elephants are treated quite well by their "mahouts" (the guy that rides and take care of his elephant). There is a place in Rawai another on the road fm Rawai to Kata where you can go on rides. It's your choice how long and where.

wheres phuket? lol

Nelly or Dumbo

Phuk that. :D

Best places won't really be in Phuket unfortunately. Thailand has a number of Elephant sanctuaries - I've been to the one in Lampang which is unfortunately some disatnace from Phuket). Any Elephant rides in Phuket will be mainly touristy ones like a donkey ride on an English beach!

Well, I have bad news if you do not want to see them treated poorly. The mahouts all have a pick with a sharp tip on it, and they can and will whack an elephant with it to keep it in line.

Also, Elephants are very smelly, and the hairs on their back are very prickly. The back of an elephant is quite wide, so sitting on one will stretch your legs quite a bit. The neck of the elephant is not too bad to sit on, but that is where the mahout sits, so you are out of luck there.

You can ride in a gondola on top of the elephant, but if you get sea-sick you might want to reconsider.

If you just have to do it to say you have done it, then go for it. Ignore the mahouts and how they treat the animals.

That said, elephants are strong and durable, I have seen a bloke who was about 150 kilos get onto an elephant, and he was hanging onto the elephant's ear when he got on. I was expecting to see the ear snap off, but it didn't.
