Dining & Entertainment

Vegetarian restaurants serve traditional Gujarati, South and North Indian cuisines. Growing numbers of business travellers have led to the opening of many new restaurants and bars that cater to non Gujarati tastes but visitors to Surat should look out for local dishes like 鈥榰ndhiyo鈥?that use certain ingredients and cooking styles exclusive to the city. Prohibition is strictly implemented in Gujarat. The state has no shops or bars selling liquor. Foreigners however are served alcoholic drinks at some hotels upon showing their passports.

Entertainment options are limited to catching a movie at one of the local cinema houses or maybe the odd cultural music or dance performance. But the nearby beach resorts with their holiday cottages are good places to swim in the placid waters of the Arabian Sea, unwind and recharge batteries.

Shopping

Gold thread embroidery, brocades, gold and silver 鈥榸ari鈥? and silk saris are the specialities of Surat that can be bought for very reasonable sums in the city鈥檚 markets.

The city's industrialisation began nearly a century later when the Britishers set up the first factory in 1612.
