Drive to NL or Fly to NL from Ontario?

We live in Ontario and I was wondering if driving or flying would be the cheapest alternative to going to NL this summer?
I not sure price on ferry and gas right now, car rentals for the week.

Dollar for dollar, it is cheaper to drive. However, if you only have a week, then you should fly.

Driving (I've done it) takes about 21 hours from Toronto to North Sydney - straight through. Then you wait for the ferry, take the ferry, and in all likeliness you will be very tired when you hit the shore. In all, you are looking at a minimum of 2 full days of just travel. Tag that on either end of your week, and you get to visit NL for a whole 3 days. If you have more than a week - you are fine.

Ferry - You have to pre-book a spot on the ferrry (weeks before), and it is either $80 or $160 depending on which route you take (we went to Argentia). You cannot sleep in the car, you will need a berth or scramble for a cumfy chair when you get on board.

Driving - it's the only way to get around, and it is the best way to get around.

I would fly and rent a car, the only ferry to Newfoundland is through Sydney N.S and is a 8-12 hour trip to Stephenville and then a drive of 2 hours to St Johns or the east coast of the island, I did this trip when working in Halifax, it is cheaper but certainly not faster, and depending how longer your going to be there the flying and rent a car issue is more convienent.

I would recommend the drive as it is quite beautiful. There are 2 ferry routes to take and I've attached the link to them. They both leave North Sydney NS and go to different points of Newfoundland. Just have a look at the link. It will be cheaper for you to drive your own car as the car rentals in NL don't usually have unlimited kms, so it will cost you if you want to do alot of driving. Happy sailings..

I would suggest you fly into Newfoundland and rent a car. Right now gas in St. John's stand at $1.19 and is going up as of midnight Thursday May 24. Not sure of car rentals, best to check with a rental company like Hertz or Rent a Wreck.
