What is your greatest fear for the Soccer World Cup in 2010?

I hope everything works out for South Africa planning and hosting this huge event. Many people fear we won't be ready. There are some other fears out there as well. I fear for the safety of the visitors, seeing that the police and government can't get a hold on the high crime rate.

Thanks Alf Garnett for correcting that. I'm sure you know what you are talking about. Thank you Innocentia for that perfect answer on Valentine's Day.

a)One has already come true...Billions of Rands being diverted from more needy projects (health care, education, infrastructure) to build stadiums.

b)Hundreds of thousands of tourists descending onto an environment of which they have no knowledge and for which they will not be prepared.
It's going to be rich and easy pickings for the criminals.

c) That SA lives for the Wcup, what happens after 2010 in this "virtual reality" that we have created?

I agree,The government trully has a chance to lift SA's reputation out of the mud by hosting this event, and making it a success. I just hope it can be done, though i think we need leaders with some iron balls who wont be side-tracked by money, greed etc. I just wished all the other more pressing matters were taken care of first, as a lot of money is going towards the building of stadiums, new transport systems etc, when people are still living in abject poverty and failing health system.

Sorry, this has turned into a rant. yes I do have the same fears as you do, as this could make or break South Africa's reputation forever!

Games by candle light...

That it will not be moved to a safe venue such as England,Spain,Germany,US etc.
Can I also help bring you up to date with the rest of the World? There is no such tournament as the Soccer World Cup. It is the FIFA World Cup. The sport they play is FOOTBALL and if you look on the jerseys of Clubs worldwide you will see under their name, FC. It means Football Club. The word soccer is an age old acronym used by colonials and has no place in the modern world..

Lise - You got me thinking so I checked some of the European clubs. They mostly use FC but some use SC (Sporting Club). The game originated in England hence the "football" but it seems to have been taken almost directly into the language of other Countries e.g. Futbol,Fussball,Futebol etc. In South Africa they use FC as well but just why it was not translated into Afrikaans you will have to tell me. I know South Africans refer to it as 'Soccer" or "Sokka" in some cases and all I was trying to do was bring the young man into the more acceptable terminology worldwide.

Thanks Alf I always wondered what FC means because I spell Football - voetbol. My greatest fear is that the stadiums might crash ontop of the spectators because most of the best engineers have left South Africa. And we also do not have enough ambulances to take the injured to hospital and at hospital they will propably all get Iron tablets..................

That my clients in the Hospitality Industry pay to much tax in 2011.

I live in South Africa and honestly, I'm worried. The stadiums aren't built, The gau train isn't built and the South African Soccer Team is pretty god awful, oh well, that's life i guess. Anyway =)
