Travel Cell Phone for Cape Town, South Africa? |
I may be traveling to Cape Town, South Africa from the U.S. this summer for 1-3 months. How should I go about getting a cell phone for use while I'm there? The primary purpose would be security/convenience reasons, not making international calls. Local phones are reasonably cheap. You should be able to pick one up at the airport or at a Mall for less than $60 including a starter pack (pay as you go with Sim Card). All of our cell phones in South Africa use a Sim card on all three of our Cellular networks. Vodacom is the biggest cellular network and has the widest coverage. If your American cellphone uses a Sim Card and can handle quad band then you can use your own phone here in South Africa. You can buy top-up cards almost anywhere, stores, garages, vending machines, etc. Buy one in Cape Town- simple as that. Best network is Vodafone (international). |
