How to discipline children (SA way)...?

It seems quite a challenge now that I've become a parent. Reb will soon be 5 months (valentines day)...

I wonder if I'm going to be able to handle him properly when he grows up. How does one do it or manage?

Does sending him to the corner help? A little smack on the hand (My dad would strangle me if I did though)?

What does one do?

One advice I can give you, is stay constant, your no must be no and your yes must be yes. KIDS CAN MANIPULATE YOU SO DO NOT ALLOW IT...

I'm not from SA..but I would like to answer your question by saying...make up your own rules and ways to discipline your child. Don't follow a certain criteria of discipline that does not suit you or even happen to cause harm to your child both mentally and physically.
Cheerios.

Let him know what you expect him to do and what not to do. And when he goes against that, then tell him in a strict voice that it is not good. And expect him to stop it immediately.

If he does not, then ignore him for a while. But, be consequent with it. Don麓t let him do it one day, and the next not.

Children need to know their limits, how far they can go and how much they can do. It is up to you to convey that to him, if he goes against it, then let him know that you are unhappy about it.

He does not need to be hit. If he throws a tantrum he can be sent to his room for a bit of out-time, or you just ignore him for a while till he calms down.

But whatever you allow him to do or not to do, is up to you, whatever you value in life. Just remember that what you think is cute now, might not be acceptable or desirable later on when he is a bit bigger.

Oh, and praise, praise, praise all the time. We humans thrive on praise, and wither when we are punished.

Buig die boompie solank dit jong is. Don't spare the rod & spoil the child.

Hallo Inno, Reb must be such a joy now, learning something new everyday. My grand-daughter is a few days older than Reb (born on 8 Sep) and I,m looking after her now that's why I,m a bit scarce here! She is getting quite alert to things now. I think that you can discipline Reb from now, in a firm yet loving way. A mother's instinct sort of thing. Don't spoil him though, that's your mother's job! Just enjoy every minute of him while you can. Soon he will belong to another woman. Hahahaha!

A hiding when it is necessary can only help to teach your child respect for authority and discipline - lol and believe it they will take chances but they learn soon enough

I fully understand where you are coming from with this Inno, and as a SAfrican who has been brought up with discipline from my family, I would personally like the same to happen with my kids one day. Every child needs to be disciplined as they grow, but my mom spoils my niece and nephew whereas we were never allowed to do some of the things they get to do now. Enjoy Reb anyway.....or give him to me! LOL!

It can be a bit of challenge Inno, a little smack will not kill him although it might put you in trouble with your father. My daughter is 5 now whenever i had given her a smack, i always felt like a monster afterwards now i just talk to her and tell her she won't get money for school tuck shop on Fridays if she misbehaves, it works so far.

WELL AS A RULE FIRST OF ALL AT THAT AGE THEY IS A NEED FOR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION YOU MUST SIMPLY IGNORE THOSE TRYING TIMES YOU FACE WITH YOUR CHILD. ONCE HE SEES YOU AGGRAVATED THE CHILD WILL COME TO FIND THIS AS A ALTENATIVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION.
I SUGGEST YOU SHOW YOUR CHILD THAT IT IS NOT A PHSYICAL DICIPLINE YOU NEED BUT ONE WHERE THEY NEED TO FIGURE OUT AND THEN YOU BOTH CAN LAUGH AT THE DECISION TO GAIN ATTENTION. THAT WAY THE CHILD LEARNS THAT YOU CAN DISH IT OUT JUST AS MUCH AS HE CAN.
