Hi,im a female planning to go and study in south africa.any advice?

im planning to go and study in south africa prefarreable city is Cape Town.any advice on good university, safe place to stay, what to know before i go.help anything will be appreciated.

The University of Cape Town is friendly and well-respected internationally (more so than its neighbour UWC). I'd recommend staying in an official residence when you first arrive, because you won't yet know which areas are safe (I have friends who are students staying in Woodstock, but certain areas there are dangerous). Also in the Cape is the University of Stellenbosch, which is in a small wine-farming town surrounded by mountains. It's very safe (as long as you live in an area called the Green Route), but a lot sleepier and more conservative than Cape Town. It's also less racially integrated. Wits (in Johannesburg) is also very well-respected overseas, with quite a few A-rated scientists. Joburg is more dangerous though, and the lifestyle is a lot faster. But the international students' residence is on campus and is lovely, so you wouldn't have to worry about safety at home. I like it: it feels more connected to what's actually going on in the country - but it depends what kind of experience you want.

Here's a link to some advice I gave another student about UCT:

EDIT: Hmm. I can't get the link to work. Just click on my profile if you want to see it.

Hi,
Please be very, very careful. Where you stay will depend on your budget, but do not use public transport. Try to get lodging with a decent family, close to the uni and under no coricumstances walk to or from Uni.
It is unfortunate that this is the only advice I can give, but thats the facts.

A good Vaccine!

Try A good Vaccine! also be very careful, not the safest place to be.

1. University of Cape Town (UCT) is a good one.
2. Stay on campus in one of the hostels till you find your feet.
3. You going to have an excellent time......Cape Town is a lovely place.

Depends on what u want to study. UCT (university of cape town) is a very good university by then so is Stellenbosch which is about 1 hours drive from cape town and its a beautiful town nestled in the mountains. Yes be careful as u would have to be careful in any major cities of the world.

UCT is great!!!!
Stay in res...this will be your easiest access to new friends. You're gonna have a blast! Res is by far the best option...you'll be around young South Africans who can show you the ropes and help you to quickly loose that "scared tourist syndrome"...
...the people are amazing, you'll see ;)

All the best!
...i'd offer to take you out on a good "jol" but I'm all the way up in Pretoria, it's a bit far...

my advice don't eat all around their a reason why i say that and watch out your back be careful of what you touch and of what you eat.

The university of Cape town is one of the best in our country and you could find accommodation on campus. They will also have support for foreign students and will be able to tell you where you should and should not go and any other things you might need to know. SA is a great place though.

Everyone one want to go to Cape Town.

I guess its because that's where the fair skinned ones ran to after the ANC took over. There are other places, many more places but I suppse for the fair race SA now consists of just Cape Twon.

Pretoria, Durban, Pitermaritzburg, Johnesburg and Bloemfontein all have fabulous univeristies too

bring a bodygaurd

Bring a big stick

MAY I SUGGEST YOU FIRST USE AS A PROFILE ON HOW THE SOCIETY CULTURE IS FIRST AND CLASSIFY THE TYPE OF PLACES YOU WOULD GO TO AND THEN YOU GET A BETTER FEELING FOR THE PLACE. A
UNIVESITY IS A GOOD PLACE TO BE NOW WITH THE EXPECTED GROWTH THAT WILL BE BOOMING IN THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS. GOLD FOR EXAMPLE AS THE WORLD LOOKS TO SA FOR IT TO EXPAND THIER MONEY SUPPLY AND ALSO URANIUM AND HUNTED ANIMALS USED FOR OIL PRODUCTION WHICH IS SURELY TO INCREASE. GOOD LUCK
