Should people with spare rooms in big houses be made to accommodate the homeless?

Should people with spare rooms in big houses be made to accommodate the homeless? Someone has proposed this in SA already. What do you think? Those rich ouense in Sandton with lots of spare rooms...? Instead of wasting government money on building new houses the rich should be made to give something back!

My dear MJ, I do know a family living in Sandton and even though they are rich with spare rooms, they do contribute alot to the poor and less fortunate. However, I am not rich but I do understand where you're coming from and I would take a homeless person in, especially a woman with a baby or child. Unfortunately, I really wouldn't be able to afford it.

How are they wasting govt money on houses? Isnt it their own money? I think thats pretty rediculous. If that was the case, no one would build a house, they would just go live in some mansion on somebody elses dime.

people are generally homeless because they put them selves there thought there own problem and to put them in house with good law abiding people is just stupid ... why should people not prepared to help themselves be a drag on the good honest people in are society

It doesn't work that way. People who own a larger home have worked to get what they have. They can be asked to give something back if they choose to , but no one should be forced to do so.

No, would you open your home to a complete stranger. Why should someone be made to just because they have a spare room. And most people of affluance do give something back.

No, absolutely not! "Making" people do anything is the wrong way to go about running a country. All you end up with is anger, hatred.....and more ways to get around it. You can't make a law against "selfishness" or lack of empathy.

We are not communists here by the way. However even in the 1920's there were flop houses that accommodated the down and out. It would seem, this is a more violent day with drugs and violence, all civility is gone. We are barbaristic in our tastes, hard core violent and sexual films, glorifying drugs and immediate gradification. Look at the young people and their drug and violence. People have forgotten they have a soul to lose. Society reflects that. Common decency and moral are a thing of the past.

no, i dont agree with this at all. some people have council houses which are still their home, most of these people have children, and no-one wants strangers around there children..people also own valuble things, not just expensive things, but things that've been past down through generations in family... and strangers could steal these...

people who have mortagaes, or who own their home, shouldnt be made to house homeless people.... i have a mortage, and if i was made to house the homeless, i would be extremely peeved as i work hard to pay my mortgage and rent to own my home,... why should i have to have a stranger living in my home??

i dont believe in homlessness... i think there is really no need for it.. most homeless people arent on the streets because they HAVE to be. they're also on the street thorugh no fault of there own... i really dont believe in it... there are plenty of hostels and shelters for the homeless to go to, but instead the choose to stay on the street hoping people will help them out, with money, etc...
sak yourlsef... how many homeless people try to help themselves? how many get up and go looking for a job to help themselves? how many go into public toilets to have a wash and keep themselves clean? not alot thats for sure...

this topic really gets to me, especially when u see them with children or dogs, begging in the towns.... u dont use children to make people feel sorry for u... and u dont use pets either.... and how'd these people get the money to buy a dog in the first place???

now i know i sound like bull - but that is communism! if you work hard and you pay for your home (or any other possesion for that matter) , you have the right to have it as big as you want.

furthermore - those rich people in sandton do more than their part by paying astronomical sums of tax every month - getting nothing in return in the sense of safety, healthcare, education or infrastructure. if you want to blame somebody for the poor not having homes - blame the anc government for pocketing any economic benefits flowing into this country...

how come you say goverment money is wasted by building new houses? the people building the houses are paying for it... (exept for the president, refer to the above: "anc pocketing any economic inflow...") and they are the only people actually doing something to stimulate the economy! if you want to see south africa go downhill even faster - they should take that liberty away from the rich.

contrary to popular belief, nothing is gained by giving free handouts... there is no respect towards it and without respect, you can't maintain something or appreciate it! the only way to uplift the poor is to give them a proper education - and pride in what they have. why build free houses for people? let them pay for it (R10 even) and they will look after it! and let them build it themselves (with a little bit of help from others.)

human kindness can only go so far. imagine you theoretically have someone move into your house. while you're at work, working your *** off to put food on the table - they'll sit on their lazy arses on your sofa, watching your tv, eating your food, and raping your wife. why? because in south africa there is no such thing as a responsibilty - to yourself, your family, your community or your country. you have rights, which translated, means criminals have rights and nobody else does.

Maybe if I had helpers quaters I would. But they would have to help around the yard, like do the garden or something. Nothing in this world comes for free. If I went to school and worked my @ss off to get to where I am, I should expect the next person to do the same.

This is absurd! While I recognise your concern for homeless people, it would be much better to let them work for a place to stay, like it is done at the Night Shelters. There, in return for a contribution to help clean and maintain the place, one is allowed to spend the night. I can not imagine any sane person in South Africa opening up his house to accommodate some bergies - peeing in the bed because they are drunk, burning the chair to make a fire, mucking in the toilet, using the curtains as a towel etc.

Handouts are not the solution. One has to earn something in order to be able to attach a value to it. Without that, one has no respect for oneself or for other people麓s things.
