Anyone experienced this before?

Zim asked a Q about being allergic to sleep. Yes, its not possible I know. The thing is I sprouted these red itchy and dry marks all over my body. My doc told me it was from eating tinned food, she says she'd had quite a few people come in with the same problem recently. I am supposedly allergic to the sulpher in it. I normally have tuna (in oil) and green peas (not koo). But last night I saw "sulphite" written on two different brands of wine I had bought.... I was too scared to have it.

Is anyone else allergic to this and should I stay away from red wine (rose) and sweet white wine?

Do all SA wines (as above) contain Sulphite?

Cant be from my sheets. My mom used to make me change mine every week and wash them. So thats been instilled in me.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be unpacking my cupboards today - good day for charities hey?

Just called my mother. :)
All wines have sulphite in except organic wine.
Some people are allergic.
My mom says it's 38 to 40 parts (milimils per litre).
It's a small amount and is set by law how much may be in the wine.
Red wine contains more than white wine does. Rose contains about the same as red wine.

Depends on the wine maker how much is in the wine. But there is a legal limit.
My mom doesn't remember what that is.

Sulphite is a preservative added to many foods. Also check your fruit juices. They have it the most. A good quality wine should not need sulphite. Just look around.

I can only answer you on the sulphite content in wine and say yes, its not possible cause its a natural ingredient in grapes, you should ask for an organic wine, some are sulphite free. Hope that helps.

I've never heard of that before! I guess if you only get the marks after you in canned food it could be true...

I get red marks all over when I sleep sometimes. It could be heat rash or an allergy to your sheets or washing powder or there might be something in your bed scratching you while you're sleeping.

it may not be what you are eating , check your bed for bedbugs that's what my be causing the red itchy and dry marks

My mother is also allergic to sulphate/sulpher/swael/swaeloksied. In the end she had to go on a total homeophatic diet. Woolworths makes a wine that does not contain sulphate. Most foods contain sulphate just check the label, raisins etc. You will have to start to eat only organic things as they put it in everything to preserve the food. Start looking it is everywhere, vinegar, fruit juice, chutney, tomato sauce, Lay's and other crisps......You will have to start eating like your grandmother used to eat 120 years ago, all things natural. Oh and do not forget most medicines, potions and lotions contain sulpher as well.

I was on an anti boitic a few years ago, and after 2 days I came out with such a bad rash. It looked like someone threw boiling water on my legs and arms because I had welts everywhere. Turns out it was a sulfur based anti botic. So yes, an allery to sulfur is not uncommon. You must also know a lot of seafood has sulfur in it. Especially prawns and crabs, so try and avoid those.

Yes also most foods are prserved with sulfides. Like my favourite Brutal Fruit. But if you keep the consumption down, and dont take in too much at a time (not just the booze hahaha) you should be fine.

You can go to a Dr and get a proper allergy test done.

I do not know about all SA wines but I have had bad asthmatic allergic reactions to both SA and some French wines (reds) owing to the sulphur dioxide used as preservative. I have never had this reaction to Italian wines so usually I stick to the good old chianti. It's a shame they have to bugger around with the wines like this.

i'm not hun. ;)

Hi... yes my mom has a sulpher allegy which apprently could be genetic so make sure its on ur kids/ brother/ sisters medical notes just in case... the way my found out about her allergy was through a course of medication she was on that contained sulpates and put her into a coma, so please please make sure its made clear in ur medical records and you mentionit when ever ur medicaly treated and let others know for an emergency situation...
unfortunatly there is a huge amount of food & drink that has sulpher, most of which is prepackaged, premade, precooked, pretinned etc so the fresh stuff is the best. lots of sauces also have particularly chinese takeaway type food as it can be used as a preservative.
yes wine unfortunatly is often full of sulpher, it is very dependant on the brand/ make tho, so just check out the labels before you buy... red wine in particular, white wine less so, however SA wine has lower levels than south american and european.
good luck and take care

Eish...Inno, you selling me out now.....I didn't go to the doctor.....I was afraid........somebody has made an appointment, and we will go together tomorrow......maybe we should assume this sulpher is the cause........but it's late now......

I know of two organic red wines: Upland (available at Makro or from the farm in Wellington) and Woolies. Upland is nicer. There are others: I saw about 5 exhibiting at an organic expo in Cape Town. I forget the names, but if you call the organic association they could tell you. I know people who're mildly allergic to sulphites and they can handle ordinary white wine, but not red.

The foods with the most sulphites are wine, dried fruit and some fruit juices (check the ingredients. Fruitree is the worst, but Liqui Fruit is safe). If you cut those out, you should be ok.

Are you sure it's not an allergy to washing powder? I get a rash from Omo. Try switching to Sunlight (the least allergenic) for a week or two, and see if that doesn't get rid of it.
