Why prostitution is legal in Singapore. What is the reason?

Prostitution is tolerated in designated red-light districts but soliciting & pimping for sex in public is illegal.

Because they haven't passed a law making it illegal.

There have been licensed brothels in Singapore for a long time. No one pays much attention to the issue-out of sight, out of mind? It's not as if they have some gaudy cathouse right by the Merlion or something. The licensed brothels are very discreet and low-key-some of the unlicensed prostitutes are the aggressive ones.

The government makes oodles of money by taxing the industry, and licensing the whores and requiring them to get regular medical checkups helps keep Singapore from becoming a disease-ridden pesthole like Bangkok.

It's no odder than it being legal in the state of Nevada.

Good reasons to let it be legal. Their going to do it anyways, so why not tax them, and make sure they use protection and have safe sex. It is very much watched in the state of Nevada, and the prostitutes are regularly checked for diseases. It's not talked about much in the United States, but it is very legal in the state of Nevada. No need to leave the country.............

Its a win-win situation for all. Govt. wins (more income). Prostitute wins (employment and more $$). And client also wins.What other reasons could there be??? Hey, but I forgot about God..He seems to lose out as nobody wants to listen to his commandment anymore. "Thou shall not commit adultery...". People have forgotten too. Govt can tax them and also cut down the sexually abuse crime such as rape.

This is quite similar to cigarettes and casino issues.

Why stop ppl smoking in food court and even hawker centre.Why stop ppl below 18 from smoking. Why don't govt. totally ban cigarette in singapore. If totally ban,,,no tax to earn.

A few years ago, casino proposal is denied by govt. Now, casino is opening at Sentosa soon.

Strategy changed :
Because of $$$, tax coming into singapore instead of flowing into other counrty which have casino lo.

If Govt ban it, they will still do it illegal in sg or spend $$ overseas la (prostitution or gambling).
Why not these cash flowing back to singapore instead.
It denfinitely attract more tourists and foreigner gamblers to sg...which in turn help to give more jobs..such as hotels,

If you want your family to stay away from these stuffs,
better fix your eyes big big on them 24hrs la..can't just blame on this and that.
