Would you like your country more or less if there was no mandated religion?

And there were no religious police. You could legally chose which religion to practice, and schools didn't teach all children about Islam.

Hmm...Well i guess...Mandated would be better in some countries... Darn this is a tough question...:\ But hey since Saudi Arabia is a vital Islamic nation, and it is where Islam started, and a lot of important events occured, for Saudi Arabia, It would be better if it is an Islamic Nation, or mandated as it were.

I live in Canda and there is no mandated religion. Couldn't imagine living someplace where it was. You should have freedom of choice.

I would hate living in Saudi Arabia if there was no Islam. I'm Muslim and I hate the religious police but I will deal with that by making sure I obey the laws of the country when my husband and I go home in like 2010.

Islam is what Saudi is all about.. Its the host to Gods house ie: Mecca...
Muslims here feel special for having been given that privilege, we want to keep it safe and clean of any other thoughts or religious ideals.. that's why no other religion is allowed to be practiced.. Its not to be prejudiced, but we wouldn't want it any other way.. and we don't feel any less about it.. You wouldn't understand unless you were a MuslI'm how we feel about the country... I personally am 29years old, im an American-Saudi by citizenship and I've never, ever been approached by the religious police.. I always hear stories, but I'm beginning to think some people stretch the truth to get attention.. ...

First of all I have to disagree with your question in many ways.

There is no mandated religion in Saudi. This is a fact.

The official religion is Islam but his is not a mandated but rather is the overall religion of the Saudis (otherwise people like me has to convert to Muslim to enter Saudi). Same like Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Catholicsm, the Islam as their religion is inherited by children from their parents and thus being practiced by default. However, it is not being mandated by the parents. Children once grown ups can freely choose which religion they would like - it's now dependent on how strong your faith is that will keep you from changing or not and Muslims are above the rest. This I must admit.

EDIT 1

Mintee - Stories about Saudi Religious Police could be stretched yes and I agree. Muttawas who normally travel using GMC Suburban 4WDs with 2 or 3 non-smiling policemen are generally seen in the crowded area where there's quite a number of Asian Expats.Im talking about places like Supermarkets, mall, souks, etcc where you will find Philippinos, Indians, etc... who regularly meet and gathers. Believe me Muttawas can be very harsh and will either ask specially the ladies to wear their veils or close their Abayas or anything accordingly. And they get pretty rough sometimes by throwing these men & women inside the jail for some petty things like using a public phone and speaking during the time of prayer...

Please with your permission - do let me know the experience the time when you encountered one.

I'm an American muslim here and I love the country. I love what its about...how it started as a country of Tawheed (Islam, worshipping one God) and I love the religious police!
