Alcatraz? Are they REALLY thinking of tearing it down for some peace center?!?!?

And why when they can build it anywhere? Would YOU vote to have it torn down?

There's a proposal to tear it down, but even if it makes it through the vote today, it's meaningless. If it was voter approved, then it would essentially become an "official suggestion"... The city has no authority to do ANYTHING with Alcatraz. The State was no Authority to do anything with Alcatraz. Only the Federal Government can, and only through Congress. And the odds of Congress voting to destroy a national landmark that brings in god knows how much tourism money each year is like 1/9868946748367385674647867456.

So no... they aren't going to tear it down. Some new age wanking Marinite thought it would be nice to put of a "Peace Center" (complete with 3D projection screens!!! That's totally what I think of when I think "peace"... multi-media exravaganza!!!), and have it replace Alcatraz because Alcatraz has such a "dark" and "morbid" history. *rolleyes*

So... it's a stupid idea, and there's no way in hell it will happen, even if it gets voted for (which it *probably* won't).

No,I would not vote in favor to put it down! Why?Because its part of the US History

yes.and no I wouldn't vote for such a historical place to be torn down.

No. Some people from Marin managed to get the proposal on the ballot, but it won't pass.

It's a meaningless waste of time. The referendum is non-binding, and it was placed on the ballot because some religious nut (Buddhist, this time) and 10,000 of his flock decided to abuse California's citizen initiative law.

Any changes to the status of Alcatraz will require an Act of Congress, as it is owned by the federal government. And given their policies, I doubt very much Nancy Pelosi and George Bush are interested in building a "global peace center."
