DMV fines for not getting California license within 10 days of becoming a resident?

I've been living in california for over 5 years. Problem is, I never got a license here and am still using the one from my home state. How much are the fines going to be? Is there a website with this information?

I'm from California but moved away to Washington state a few years ago. When I returned home to California and tried to get my driver's license, the DMV wouldn't let me due to a seizure I had several years ago. When I moved to Washington, THEIR DMV wouldn't let me get a license because of my one and only seizure, which happened after the flu. I spent a few months trying to clear my record with California DMV and the restriction was finally lifted. I was able to not only get my Washington driver's license, but they renewed it. When I moved back to California, the DMV told me I had a safety flag on my record due to my seizure. I had already had that cleared up years ago, but still they refused to budge. For this reason, I have been unable to get my CA license. I drove with my Washington license until it expired and now I can't drive at all because of bureaucratic red tape over a DMV mistake. When I had health insurance, my doctor took so long to put in the referral for a CT-scan and another test he said I would need before he would give me a DMV medical clearance to drive, that when I was forced to quit my job and lost my insurance, I couldn't afford to pay for these two tests on my own. The tests cost $1600 total and that's too much money for me. Fortunately, at my new job, my insurance goes into effect next month and I should be able to get my medical clearance soon.

I told you my story because I want you to know that there are valid reasons why people often can't get their license within the 10-day required timeframe. The DMV could care less, I believe and they really have no way of knowing how long you've lived in California. For all they know, you've just been visiting a long time. Like one person said though, if your out-of-state license expires, then you will indeed be likely to have to take the driving as well as the written test in order to get your California license. I've already looked into it. You live in California now and really should get your California license. Once your out-of-state license expires, if you don't have your California license and you get pulled over, you won't be paying a little fine. You will be paying a hefty one, and who knows what the penalties will be. I am unable to drive and it's driving me nuts. I can't wait to get my license again. My son and husband have to chauffeur me around. It's no picnic not to be able to drive when you want/need to, so I'd just go get your California license. Don't worry about the fine. Your out-of-state license will have the expiration date on it, but that doesn't mean anything to the DMV. That doesn't indicate how long you've been living here. They don't really have any way to prove how long you've been here, so I wouldn't worry about it.

There aren't fines. Just go to the DMV, tell them you live here now and need a CA license.

The only issue you might have is if your previous license has actually expired because you will most likely have to retake both the written and driving test. If your old license is still valid you only have to pass the written test. And of course either way, there is the eye exam,

I'm surprised that you have been able to purchase car insurance with an out-of-state license.

No fine, just go to the DMV. Don't tell them how long you've been here. You'll have to take the written test again

There will be no fines. You don't need a website because they aen't going to do anything about it being pass 10 days. There are so many military people in this area that they don't have the time or the need to bother people about it. I've had a CDL since 1966
