What is a must see in Salzburg?

I will be only 1 day in Salzburg and was wondering what is a must see there?

One day is definitely too short for Salzburg, but let me give you some hints - your decision will depend on your personal interests:
1) The city center protected by UNESCO is an absolute MUST - plan 3 hours minimum for that. You should stroll through the narrow pedestrian zone walkways on the foot of the fortress, visit the Salzburg Cathedral which is also the background for the famous Jedermann performance at the Salzburg festival, visit the Mozart statue and the Mozart house and also walk up to the fortress - you will have a splendid view over Salzburg city! You can do that walk either by yourself (all is walking distance) or with a local guide or a local tour
2) If you are a fan of the movie "Sound of Music" you have to do the Sound of Music Tour. It takes a half day and shows you not only the city of Salzburg, but also the surrounding lake district and of course all the places you know from the film.
3) If you want to have fun you should visit Hellbrunn castle with the famous tricky water park. It was built by an archbishop to entertain his guests. As you walk around through a wonderful garden you might get wet by hidden water sources - great fun and nice place - calculate 2 hours including the guided tour.
4) Just opposite the old city across the Salzach river you can find Mirabellpark, the most famous park aera in Salzburg with the Mirabell castle. It would extend your city walk for apx. 40 minutes and it is worth that.
5) You also can do a boat trip on the Salzach river. Not my favourite suggestion, but many people like it
6) Of course there is also a cultural program in Salzburg, but within one day you may not have time for that
7) If you want to go up high you may take a cablecar ride to Untersberg, a high mountain about 10 km outside the city center. Only do it if you have really good weather, it will tak half a day - and wear proper shoes!

Well, thats some of the things you can do. Anyhow, just visit the website http://www.panoramatours.com, they offer many different tours and even if you do not book those tours you will get many more ideas. The website can be viewed in English. If you decide to do the Sound of Music tour, those guys are the best. Besides, they also offer hotel accomodation, but that you can find everywhere on the web.

If you need further informations, just mail me to topferl@aon.at if you like!

Best regards from Salzburg

The castle is a definite must see, and I'd say ONE of the Mozart Houses (the Mozarthaus - where he lived later in life, rather than the birth house), then the Dom (Cathedral) and archbishop's house.

There is more, but if you have only one day, that is what I suggest

I'd suggest to take a city tour first, the one which starts at 9.00 or 9.30 in the morning. This way, you'll get the first impression about all the major sightseeings of Salzburg. You could take time and have a closer look at those which interested you most later on the same day. I'd recommend the castle, Cathedral, Mozarts' House on Makart Square and Schloss (=Palace) Hellbrunn. Also, don't forget to take a closer look at those gorgeous Mirabell Gardens.

Go to the Information Centre and there will let you know. There are number of lakes and mountings not to be missed in the surroundings. It is also fantastic city. Lots of concerts of classical music if you like that sort of music.
