Off for 1st ever visit to Salzburg soon. Any suggestions of things to do/must see places please?

Salzburg is named after its massive castle (the Salzburg; Salz=salt, Burg=castle). I was unconquerable before cannons, because the locals had so much salt (due to local salt mines) that they were able to preserve food long enough to outlast a siege. You can walk up if you're a fitness fanatic, but most people take the funicular (ground-level cable car). Leave lots of time to see the castle, and have lunch in its excellent restaurant. Usually, there is also a special exhibit going on. If you have seen lots of medieval castles, Salzburg fortress is still worth seeing, and if you haven't, it's a must.

Another thing I really enjoy is the gardens of Mirabell Castle. They are free, and walking distance from other attractions like Mozart's house. There are wonderful plantings, trees, and statues, some of them quite famous.

Just walking through the old parts of town and across the Salzach River (especially on the pedestrian bridge) is lots of fun.

Oh, and make sure you see the cathedral. If you can manage it on a Sunday, you might see local people wearing their finery going to Mass. So long as you are respectful, you will be very welcome.

If you have a car available and the time, visit the Salzkammergut, the lake area near Salzburg. You can do it in a day trip. There are salt mines, ice caves, great views, and lovely inns to eat lunch at. (If you are going in the Winter, this is not a good idea, though -- the area is more of a summer resort.)

Hi salzburg is a beautiful city i lived in Austria for a year. their is a lot to see and do in salzburg. first you have the castle its a must then the museum's their good if u like the theatre their Are always sum good plays going on.or their is the sound of music tour.and much more. the night life is great their Are two Irish bars the shamrock and omaleys .the shamrock is good for live Irish music and drunken nights he he... you will have a good time..enjoy
