What is the situation in Rio de Janeiro like?????????

i need to know for a school project REPLY PLEASE!!!!!!

It is maybe the most beautiful city in the world, called "Cidade Marvilosa", or Marvelous City.

But, even though Rio De Janeiro is a city with a few very rich people, Rio de Janeiro is a city with widespread poverty. So, when visiting, you need to be careful where you go, and careful of what you are wearing, and careful of what you have in your pockets, because kids from one of their 600 favelas ( slums ) have been known to do muggings on tourists. But, if you are careful, you won't need to worry. Just make friends with the locals. The tourists who go into it knowing what they are doing are the tourists who have a great time while they are there, and they can't wait to go back!

The people there are really friendly! People in Rio de Janeiro are called "cariocas", and they are always willing to take on a new American friend. Many of them will even put you up for the night if you don't have a place to stay!

It helps if you know some Portuguese, but some of them speak English, because they get so much English-speaking tourism there.

There is nothing you can't do in Rio de Janeiro. You have great night-clubs, gardens, forests, world famous beaches ( Copacabana and Ipanema ), lots of plastic surgery, hang-gliding, great music, great food, great drinks ( Ever tried a caipirinha? ). You name it, and Rio de Janeiro has it!

There are also 2 things ( among others ) that are known world-wide about Rio. The first is Carnaval. Rio Carnaval is held every year, 7 weeks before Easter, for 4 days. It's many things. It's the world biggest celebration, it's a competition between Samba schools, and it's 14 of the most jaw-dropping parades that you could ever see in your life. People come from all over the world to see it! But it's in February, which is the middle of summer there, and their summers are very hot!

( July would be the ideal time for an American to go. That's their winter, but it's almost as warm as an American summer. )

The second is the the most famous statue in the world, Christ The Redeemer. It's stands perched on top of Corcovado Mountain, overlooking the city, and has been since 1931. It's been in countless TV shows, movies, music videos, postcards. You've probably seen it and didn't even know it. It was even just named one of the NEW 7 Wonders Of The World.

Also, Rio De Janeiro is where the world's most famous song comes from, "The Girl From Ipanema". People all over the world have sang this song, in many languages, since 1962.

If you want to see some great photos of Rio De Janeiro, go to www.webshots.com , and use search words such as Copacabana, Ipanema, Rio De Janeiro, Corcovado, and Sugarloaf Mountain.

You can also find more than 30,000 videos on youtube under the name "Rio de Janeiro", if you put it in quotation marks. Many of them are just goofy stuff, but many are fun too. Plus you get to hear some Portuguese.

Yahoo also has a Brazilian site, which you can find at http://br.yahoo.com

I hope this helped. Have fun! :-)

What situation are you asking about? Political? Social? Religious? Beaches? Can you be more specific please?
