Is it easy for an American to make a friend out of the locals when visiting Rio de Janeiro?

Very easy, John! Specially in Rio!
We are very kind, and like to have new friends!
When you came, let me know.

sure - if you speak portuguese...

..buying caipirinhas helps too ;)

play that one very safe, there is extreme poverty there such as perhaps you've never seen, and making friends might seem easy until youre robbed or worse.
if youre in the military then you'll have no problems making friends with the Brazilian Military who are the closest thing to middle class.

Yes, very easy in fact! Brazilians are so nice and well known around the world for their hapinness and friendship. You will find it not only in Rio but all over the country. nicest people in the world, go there and see for yourself!!
