New Zealand? |
Can New Zealand get hurricanes, if so how often and where. Well, sort of. Hurricanes which formed in the tropics sometimes hit NZ, even though it isn't in the tropics. This is happening more often than it used to, because of global warming. Examples are the storm which sank the inter-island ferry Wahine in 1968 and Cyclone Bola, which caused flooding on the east coast of the North Island in 1987. Strong winds and heavy rain occur from time to time in all parts of NZ, and usually they're not caused by tropical storms. Earthquakes occur in all parts of NZ, especially on a fault line running along the west coast of the South Island, across Cook Strait and up the east coast of the North Island, and in the middle of the North Island and Bay of Plenty. Tsunamis have hit coastal areas all over. Volcanic eruptions happen in the middle of the North Island. Right now in the SW of the South Island a landslip caused by heavy rain has dammed a river and created a new lake. It could burst at any time. But because NZ only has 4 million people, natural disasters cause few deaths. The worst in recent years was 256 deaths in the Napier earthquake in 1931 and a trainload of passengers that went into a river in 1953 after a lahar washed away a bridge. Enjoy yourselves. NZ is a very safe travel destination. Regards, Pete Fowler. Report It Yes. This link explains what you want to know. http://www.seafriends.org.nz/oceano/stor... Flooding is the worst thing that we usually get over here and that is almost everywhere... and through out the winter it is the worst. also Mt Ruapahu (which is a volcano) erupts alot and has caused two lahas this year, but there are plenty of places in the world that experience more natural disasters than we do. ours arnt that bad Haha, lots of earthquakes! |
