Yes NZ is a great place to drive - some of the best roadside scenery is accessible only by driving yourself.

You need to be aware that alot of the roads are small and windy, and some are quite steep. This is especially important if you are from a place that has nice big straight roads everywhere.

In general NZers are terrible drivers, especially around Auckland.

Make sure you stick to the left as well.

Went to Queenstown a couple of years ago and the snow was so crap I changed my plane ticket so I could leave from Christchurch. I left from Queenstown, drove up the west coast then cut back across to Christchurch.

It was a fantastic drive. I'm into botany and geology so I saw some amazing things. Non nerds will probably just see a spectacular and rugged bit of coastline.

One of the best things about NZ is that you can trade lift tickets for services like tours or cash them in for food or booze.
My girlfriend and I traded ours for part of a heli-hike on Franz Joseph glacier. That was an awesome experience.

Check out the yellow pages for a full list of rental car and van companies.
The big 3 are overseas owned and expensive, but their vehicles a new. (budget, Hertz and Avis) Other companies are cheaper, but their vehicles are older.
DON'T attempt to drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound - it's just not worth it. Take a bus or plane, and you won't end up dead or damaged of the side of the road like all those other loopies who thought they could do it..
Also, note that a rental agreement forbids you to take your vehicle on the Ball Hut Road, Rainbow Road, Muriwai Beach, Russell Coast Road, Skippers Road specifically, and most add a clause to say you are not permitted on any dirt or gravel roads.
Most towns and many country localities, especially Queenstown, do not permit you to park a campervan on the side of the road overnight. The NZMCA (Google it) can give you a list of places in each town where you can park overnight off the road.
Do not hire a campervan if it is not self-contained (that is, has its own dunny and fresh water supply). There's just too many hassles.
Book well in advance if you plan to cross on the inter-island ferry, but a better idea is to hire a seperate vehicle for the North and the South Islands - saves you heaps in ferry charges.

Mobile Home: Check out Maui, Britz, Tui, Kea. New Zealand Automobile Assoc may have a 'best' recommendation so check out www.aa.co.nz

If you're after a car rental: Budget, Thrifty, A2B (I've used in the past and good value). Just remember to choose a rental that can meet you at the airport. You'll get a cheaper rate. Also make sure the person on counter understands your question.

When arriving in Christchurch a few years ago - I asked (at the airport - silly me) how much a car rental for 5 days would cost. I got told $70 ... couldn't believe my luck. Turned out to be $70 a day ... to drive the kids to school, supermarket, back to school in the afternoon and home! (Lesson learned)

There are thousands of companies magazines and and hostells offering self drives at all different prices you can look them up on the internet from england and they are roughly about the sme price in newzealand. though the hostels some times do some deals its probably better to sort it out before you go. to save you getting snowed under with all the info and companies over there! its also extra hassel when your there and you want to avoid that and just enjoy your self1 enjoy youself .... and enjoy your self. Have a agreat time!!!
