Recommended car rental in new zealand?

Out of Christchurch in August 2007, driving to and around Queenstown. 2 adults & 1 child (2.5 yrs).

What are the conditions like?

You can rent through the usual Avis, Hertz or Budget, or also try Ezy car rentals which is pretty popular here. Driving in that area should be fun as the place is quite scenic and beautiful. Happy travels :)

At this time of year we are in the middle of winter and we occasionally will have road closures.
It is best to check the road conditions before setting off anywhere. As a rule they are opened with in a day, but you know "Mother Nature" can throw a curve ball from time to time.
There are numerous rental companies so check out some.

There are many many many rentals car companies.
The big 3 (Avis, Budget, Hertz) are owned overseas and are expensive, but their cars are new. They run them to about 18 months of age or about 45 000 kilometres, then they auction them off and they are bought by the other companies who run them up to about 150 000 km.
These second tier rental companies are reasonably cheap, say around 30 to 45 dollars a day depending on the size of car.
Google "rental cars+new zealand" and see what you get.
Some of the companies are local only and you may not be able to pick up a car here and leave it there.
Some names-- A2B, Apex, About New Zealand, Rent-a-Dent and so on.
Do NOT attempt to take a rental vehicle to Milford or Doubtful Sound - take the bus trip, listen to the driver talk about the area, relax, and you won't become a statistic of yet another stupid loopy who tried to drive to Milford and failed.
Note also that rental vehicles are not permitted on the Ball Hut Road (at Mt Cook), nor the Skippers Road (at Queenstown).
