Which city in Oregon is better to live in, that provides all the amenities of a big city?

Which university is better Oregon State or University of Oregon?

Both are good universities. It just depends on what you are
interested in taking, to see which one has more to offer in
your interested field. People don't pick a school just by it's
appearance. They intend on spending a large chunk of money
to further their education. So they know they have to get the
most for their dollar and absorb as much as they can before
they have to get out on the playing field and earn a living. And
with the competition out there for so many fields now, it's the
one with the most job skills that is going to be a main con-
tender to get that job over anyone else. And then if you get
that job, you had better know what you're doing to keep it. As
there's always someone else, to step right in and take it away
from you. So it's up to you, to do research on the classes
offerred at each school. And on that, you make your
decision, as well as the cost. I had a friend majoring in
agriculture at Oregon State. He researched and found it had
the most up to date resources available on all he needed to
learn. So he enrolled there. And so you have to do your
homework and find what's right for you.
Your first question asks about cities that has all the amen-
ities of a big city, so naturally Portland is the largest. And
Eugene is the second, and then Salem. Those are the three
largest cities in the state. I don't know what you're looking
for, but there are several other towns that aren't as large
but do have alot to offer, just on a smaller scale than the
larger cities. Good luck in your search.

They are both infested with Liberals

Eugene is has mroe amenities, but it has a lot of run down areas and is not the cleanest city around.

Corvallis-Albany, on the otehr hand, doesn't provide ALL of the big city amenities, but it is very clean, and a nice place to live.

However, because of the academic nature of the two schools, you should decide based on your ideal major, and not the city. OSU is a science based school, with a little bit of liberal arts. UO is a liberal arts school with little to no science.

Unlike most other big schools you cannot easily switch from a bliberal arts/law/business major to an engineering/vet/science degree.

I personally prefer Corvallis-Albany to Eugene. I liked the little feels and the green as opposed to the problems caused by Eugene's size. Eugene doesn't have enough of the big city benefits to counter its problems.

Eugene is a very liberal area... The joke is that its a mini- San Franscico!!

OSU puts you near Salem and about an hour from Portland, not to bad.

Ok... as someone who graduated from the University of Oregon and lived in Eugene for 10 years, I can tell you that it's WAY better than Corvallis.

* Eugene is three times the size of Corvallis, with about 225,000 people in the metropolitan area of Eugene-Springfield.

* Eugene is steeped in history! It's the birthplace of Nike and home to four U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials (including THIS summer!!). That's right... before a U.S. track athlete goes to Beijing, China, this summer, they HAVE to prove themselves at the greatest track and field stadium in the world, Hawyard Field, on the University of Oregon campus.

* Eugene has a great live music scene! It gets everything from major acts to smaller indie bands. Here's a very brief list of artists that came to Eugene in 2007:

- The Decemberists
- Jethro Tull
- B.B. King
- The Black Crowes
- Los Lonely Boys
- Willie Nelson
- Carlos Mencia
- The Roots
- Jerry Seinfeld
- Bill Cosby
- Primus
- Tegan & Sara

*The University of Oregon has some of the best schools on the West Coast, including the UO Law School and the Lundquist School of Business. The journalism is one of the top in the nation, and the school of education is top notch.

Contrary to what someone else said, Oregon is a well-known research university and it is one of only 60 colleges in the country (and the only one in Oregon) that are members of the prestigious Association of American Universities. It also has the largest library in the state of Oregon, and is Oregon's only member of the Association of Research Libraries.

Plus, nearly all of the film "Animal House" starring John Belushi was filmed on the University of Oregon campus.

Oregon is also the only university in the country with a licensed, Disney character as a mascot (GO DUCKS!)

*In 2006, Eugene was ranked "The Greenest City" in the United States by the Green Institute, to given to cities that provide healthy, low-pollution living spaces for their citizens. Eugene is also recognized leader in recycling.

*Eugene has great restaurants, theaters, public transportation, culture and more. You won't find anything close to in Corvallis (though, they may have us beat in the number of frat houses... I know they have about a billion there).

Honestly... Eugene and the University of Oregon are so much better than Corvallis and Oregon State University (a land-grant, agricultural college).

Bottom line:
If you want the amenities of a big city, in a moderately sized city you'll come to Eugene. There's a reason the ENTIRE WORLD is going to be watching track athletes in Eugene for more than 2 weeks this summer!!

If you want a quieter, smaller town, with yes, some charm and friendly folks... but very little in "big city" amenities, Corvallis is for you.
