Portland / Beaverton commute to Canby? |
How long of a commute would it be? Mapquest says around 20 miles. I'm from L.A. and that's nothing here. What kind of a commute would it be? Is that common in Portland to commute to outer areas? If you're from LA, you'll still be frustrated by the commute. There is no freeway to Canby. You'll probably be taking 217 (2 lane freeway, speed limit 55, highly congested) to Interstate 5 (three lanes freeway that turns from 55 to 65 approx 5 miles south of the 5/217 interchange, also highly congested during rush hour), to State Route 551, also called the Hubbard-Wilsonville Highway (two lane two-way road, speed limit 55). From there, you'll have to turn left to get to Canby and I've seen that stoplight backed up for almost a mile during rush hour. Once you turn left, you still have a good stretch of country roads to get to Canby, including a few four-way stop signs. That would be a pretty long commute for Portland. The highway between Beaverton and Portland (26) is usually pretty congested and crowded...not like LA, but it can creep along. Once you get past Portland (from Beaverton) and head west on I-84, the speed usually picks up as you are going against rush hour traffic (outbound, instead of inbound). If you lived in the city, it would be a much better commute than if you lived in Beaverton. From Portland in the AM, probably about 20 minutes...from Beaverton...maybe 40-45 minutes.. Its about a half hour to Canby from Beaverton. Living in LA, I can understand that 20 miles is nothing. Its not very common for Portlanders to commute, I think its hilarious when I go home and visit, and people are shocked when I go across town for something, but growing up I had the same idea, until I moved down here. The difference between 20 miles down here and up in Oregon, is that here in LA, everything is accesible by huge freeways driving 70-75. In Oregon its all 45-55. I cant remember if the road off the 5 to Canby is a 55 mile zone or not. |

Portland has so many funky, hip, neighborhoods with plenty of families in them. SE Portland or some places in NE sounds like what you would like. Bring rain gear (no umbrellas- the wind will take them out) and layer your clothe... rain/rain/go/away ...az sucks, hot dry brown yuck. I can't breath there. ...Most neighborhoods in Portland are very family friendly. The culture of Portland really doesn't promote commuting that far.
