Portland neighborhood 鈥?Westmoreland?

Someone recommended this neighborhood to me.. Can you tell me anything about it? My wife and I are in our 30's. Starting a family but still like funky, slightly urban neighborhoods.. Corner pub, etc..

Westmoreland is nice. Portland has so many funky, hip, neighborhoods with plenty of families in them. SE Portland or some places in NE sounds like what you would like. You should visit and check some places out. SE Hawthorne/Belmont, NE Alberta-ish, SE Clinton...there are lots. It's a great place to live and I'm sure you'd find a neighborhood to your liking.

My school, Reed, is really close by. People use the school yard like a park. The neighborhood is nice looking and sort of woodsy. There is another park and a golf course in the vicinity. IMO, there's not much too do in walking distance, but I've only been there for a couple of months.

It is hard to say that you are in the city, but downtown isn't too far away (only 15-20 min by bus).

Personally, I wouldn't call the place funky. There is a comfortable "hippie?" feeling about the place (it is SE Portland, after all). And I see just as many younger families as older ones around the school.

If you want to be close to walking to shops and coffee place's then NW 23 or the Pearl district are good old neighborhoods and the Sellwood or Hawthorne are also good those are all older neighborhoods and all are walking distance to shops and coffee place's and restraunts. They are all also close to downtown. Best of luck where ever you choose.

depending on where you're coming from, you'll find nearly all of Portland funky. What passes for a typical "close -in" Portland neighborhood, would be far and away funky and hip in most cities.

i think westmoreland works for your demographic, as do many other close-in neighborhoods.

and no disrespect to the poster who recommended nw 23rd and the pearl, but i'm not alone in the opinion that those "neighborhoods" are lame. the pearl is nothing but a dime-a-dozen warehouse loft renewal district catering to yuppies and middle-aged new york ex-pats.

23rd is not as bad. it's very overpriced and their main st (23rd!) could fit nicely into most suburban shopping malls (urban outfitters and a bunch of starbuckses).

It's a great neighborhood with wonderful old, remodeled homes and a great feeling of community. It has some very funky pubs, shops and restaurants and great parks. Lots of young families there.
