Do people in Portland OR speak with an accent?

If they do please explain how it sounds....what words are effected?
Thanks!

No one ever thinks they have an accent. I am from California and everyone in CA, OR, NV, WA, etc sounds the same to me.

I visited a friend in Kentucky a few years ago and people there said I talked "funny" with an accent. I laughed and said it wasn't me that talked "funny" - it was them.

So, it will depend on where you are from as to whether you will think people in OR have an accent.

NO. Ive been there and everyone in OR sounds pretty normal to me...

I live in Oregon not Portland around 80 miles south or so. I have never noticed an accent. But I have been told us Oregonians coined the Fraze "Sweet"

Last year I worked in San Diego, Ca for the tax season, I had this guy and his wife come in to get their taxes done. They had just moved back to San Diego after spending several months in Oregon. We were talking about how pretty it was how it is much cheaper to live in Oregon. The guys Jeez what that thing everyone up there said all the time" He just couldn't remember a few moments later his hand hit my desk. and says "Sweet" that's what it was sweet," I lost all concentration and stared at him then bussed out laughing so hard. He was right on the ball on that one. My kids say it my husbands says it. I hear people use it all the time. He even said it exactly the same way everyone around here says it.

I don't think that anaswered your question sorry, but I thought it was pretty darn funny.

It's tough to say. While we don't have a drawl or very melodical speech, we do have a distinct way of speaking, fairly unique to the Pacific Northwest. We speak mush more slowly than California, and we tend to mumble and fudge our constanants.

Water become wadder.
Hit becomes hi' (we just stop our vowel sudenly and do not actualy pronounce the t)

It's tough for an American to notice these things, but the foreign students have harder harder times understanding people from the PNW because of our fudging.

I moved from Portland to Louisiana where everybody has a very strong southern drawl. I started working and when I would say something a little fast people sometimes said they couldn't understand my accent! I thought it was funny . So it's all relative to where you are coming from. I now live in NJ and people here thought I had an accent too, they described it like a valley girl sound but not too strong. Of course they have the strong NJ accent you hear on the Soprano's. To answer your question, yes Oregonians have an accent.

No. Except for the hippies.
