Do people in Portland OR worry about earthquakes and how does it effect your homeowners insurance?

Do people in Portland OR worry about earthquakes and how does it effect your homeowners insurance?

The BIGGEST mistake people make is they think their homeowners insurance covers Earthquakes & Floods,it DOESN'T!
So many people in Oregon and Southwest Washington ran into this type of trouble when their homes were flooded this year and found out they were out of luck as to their insurance.

You must buy two separate policies for flood and earthquake coverage.
Don't assume that FEMA, the SBA and/or private charities will bail you out with funds to rebuild after a major disaster.

FEMA has very limited funds and strict eligibility criteria. SBA loans are modest and must be repaid. Private charities are being severely stretched by an ever-increasing demand for their services.

I don't live in an area known for flooding but I sure did add on Earthquake insurance to my home owners policy after a quake did some minor damage to my home in SW Washington { Born and lived in Portland }.
Being Portland does have many major faults running threw it and also with having a Volcano 35 miles away which can create quakes, better safe then sorry .

I've lived in Portland for 25 years. I have never been afraid of an earthquake.

You can get earthquake insurance without much problem. Commonly the policies only pay for damage exceeding 5 to 10% of the value of a house, and have large deductables.

We really are not seen as that much of an earthquake threat outside of disaster movies.

The people don't really worry about. However, the housing community is VERY aware of it.

Unlike in the midwest, we have to dig deep and tough foundations for the houses in order to pass the regulatios. Homeowners insurance is quite aware of earthquakes. I wouldn't know whether they cover it or not. My gut feeling is that like flood insurance, it isn't fully overed under basic insurance.

The earthquakes here are few and far between, they're not strong, but they last for up to 5 times as long as the short California quakes. This is due to being on a Subduction fault as opposed to a normal fault. We are supposed to get "the big one" sometime, but most of us aren't worried.

I don't worry about earthquakes, but I do carry earthquake insurance! Just a little piece of mind!

I can't tell you how it effects homeowners insurance as my husband and I don't carry it, but in the alomost 40 years that I have lived in the Portland area (born and raised here) I have only been in 1 earthquake. They do happen here...and some have caused enough damage to ruin buildings, but Portland is definately not Southern California.

No not really.

I've lived in Portland for 35 years. We have never had a noticable earth quake. Every so often the news will freak out about how the big one is coming. Maybe it is, and maybe its not. I figure its not worth the mental energy to worry about it.

Homeowners insurance is fairly inexpensive compared to all my other bills.

nope not afraid at all.
