Becoming a bartender in Oregon?

To get a license to bartend in Oregon, do I need to get my OLCC card AND take a bartending class or does the bartending class cover OLCC?

Yes, you must have your OLCC. I would say to save your money & DO NOT go to bartending school. Find a lil dive bar because they usually hire without experience. That's how I got my start here!
I tell people I know to get a job at the Rose Garden becuase they have OLCC classes for their new employees (Still costs, but a lot easier). They're not hiring right now for bartenders, but keep trying!

You can NOT serve alcohol in Oregon unless you are over 21. You need to have an OLCC card to serve alcohol.

The law now requires alcohol servers to take and pass a class in responsible alcohol service every 5 years. Oregon law requires servers to have a service permit if they mix, serve, or sell alcohol by the drink in a licensed business. Managers who supervise employees who mix, serve, or sell alcohol must also have a service permit. One of the qualifications for a service permit is to take and pass a server education class.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) administers the course by certifying community colleges and private trainers to teach the server education classes. The OLCC designs, reviews, and updates the model curriculum and grades the tests. To assure accurate, quality instruction, the OLCC regularly evaluates the instructors who teach the class.

On average, providers charge each student $25 to $40 for the class.

if you already have experience you can get hired first, there's a Leigh way i believe it's a month between hiring and having to get your olcc license. I believe you have to be currently employed to get it anyways. I would skip bartending school, it's alot of money for not alot of result, most of what restaurants are looking for is dependability and being friendly. If you don't have a lot of experience but have serving experience, you can ask to see if you can go into the bar as a cocktailer, but most of the time it's very competitive in a restaurant. but there's tons of bars. get the bartenders little black book, no your mixes and your call liquors it's basically what you learn in bartending school.
