How bad are the blackflies in Maine in mid-May on the coast (Portland area)?

We'd like to rent a house on the water, but don't want our vacation ruined by the blackflies.

wont be an issue---they are more inland in the mountainous area and probably wouldnt be out in mid-may yet.... the only coastal bugs to be concerned with are called "greenheads" which are similar to blackflies in that they'll eat you alive but they usually dont come out 'til later in the summer either...bottom line is that bugs wont be a problem in mid-may but cold water will be!!!!!

i dont believe there is alot of black flies near the coastal areas in maine. think maybe if you head more to the wooded area then thats where the problem would be.
