Can Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix Canariensis) be grown in Portland OR?

I know that I never seen this date palm (grow everywhere in Southern California ,especially Beverly Hills) in Portland OR. But given Portland mild climate and heat island effect, can this tree theoretically be grown there? I did see this palm grown in central Paris.

i must dissagree with the last posted answer... i believe they would grow. keep in mind that all palms are not alike and even palms of a same genus can be drastically different in enviormental needs... including temp..... there for just because shari put a typically indoor palm set for zone 11-10 min temp 55f doesnt mean your pheonix zone 11-8 min temp 10f mean your palm will die too.
i have a phoenix canariensis in my front yard in North Seattle that i planted 3 years ago, it does fine with out protection in my yard, it gets morning to high noon full sun and partial shade after, it is under a tall pine tree so protected some what but still gets snowed on. i believe it is very posible that you could grow one there in portland, the weather seems to mirror seattle well even portland might be a dagree or 2 warmer from day to day. we have the same usda zone. just rember that a P.canariensis is a SLOW grower! and given the pnw coulds we are not optomial growing conditions so no growth spirts sould be expected!! youll be lucky if you or i ever see the tree infuctescences!
i do believe there is a mature specimine off the coast of centrial OR, you'll have to google it.
i must only suggest a few more things, if you want to plant a phoenix plant 2, get one Phoenix canariensis, the other a Phoenix sylvestris. the sylvestris is a bit more hardy to cold.
if you dont want to worry about the tree dyeing from cold altogheather and not feel like you are gambleing every winter ... buy a Jubaea Chilensis (Chilean wine palm)
they, in my opinion, are way more beautiful and hardy to 10f they are from the Andes in Chile and dont like hot humid climates like florida but are perfect for the cooler pnw. rare species and sometimes hard to find, they grow slow too!!! SO my last pieve of advice is Buy them AS BIG AND OLD AS YOUR MONEY CAN BUY! or youll never get to fully appriciate them!

If the tree can stand dry heat, or some cole temperatures I'm sure it could grow in portland, especially with some care. Portland is a very fertile area, and tons of plants are able to grow there. I doub't it could survive in the wild though. The pine trees aren't to freindly. They grow very tall quite fast and they tend to block out light for shorter plants.

I live in Portland Oregon and I call Drakes 7 Dees for all my plant and gardening questions, which are always answered cheerfully and informatively.
Here is one of them. I don't know if there are more, you can ask when you call. There may be one near you.

It's too cold here in the winter for one to develop. How do I
know that? Many years ago, they had two palms brought in
and tried to get them to grow outside, of a business building.
They kept them inside until they were more fully grown, before planting them at the outside entrance. They were not date palms, just the tall towering variety. And they didn't hold up. They couldn't take the colder climate.
If you ever take a tour of one of the date palm processing
plants in Indio, California, you will learn that their location where the date groves are, is the only place they will grow and
develop fruit, in the US. That's why you won't find them anywhere else in California either. They thrive in the climate there with mild winters and full hot sun in the summer.
You could probably grow one in Phoenix without any problem tho. The temps parallel that of Indio, but a but more humid due to the monsoons in summer.
