I live in San Francisco but getting tired of it. Is Portland OR a friendly place to live?

I am middle aged and gay and have lived in SF for eight years

tiring of it because I find it unfriendly and so youth-oriented

Someone told me recently that Potland OR is very gay friendly and stress-free

Is it generally a friendly place?

sp ----> Portland

Indeed, Portland is a super friendly place...almost too friendly some would say. For example....you're at a stop light and it turns green. The car in front of you just sits there...and sits...and sits...but no one honks! Well...I honk, but most don't.

Portland is very gay friendly. It obviously won't have as many sort of 'exclusive' gay things as SF, but we really don't care about who you love. There are some 'gay' bars or whatever, but you will also find heteros hanging out there usually as even the gay bars are more gay friendly that straight up gay bar.

It's a super relaxed city, super liberal, easy going and fun. It certainly doesn't have the level of options available in SF, but you can spend a weekend raging or a weekend being mellow...it's way better than Seattle if you ask me. Seattle is dirty, crowded and they have no trees left! Portland rocks, I think you should visit and you'll fall in love with it!

If you want a place similar to SF, but more oriented to the elderly and family friendly (with a sizable gay population), I would suggest Seattle, WA.

I also reccomend you check out seattle, but yes portland also has everything you are looking for

Portland is gay friendly, and has a large gay community. The gay community has lots of social activities for all ages and interests.

You will find each neighborhood and suburb of Portland has a different feel. You will want to spend sometime in each one before buying a place. Some of them are higher crime areas than others. Some have higher ethnic community than others. Some are a flash back to the past... of the 50s and "Father Knows Best". Some are stuck in the 60's- 70's with the hippies and everything. Older well established communities like Lake Oswego and West Linn are two upscale neighborhoods. If you want a brand new upscale modern community there is the Happy Valley/Sunnyside area. Portland's cost of living is significantly less than SF and Seattle. You won't have any problem finding an affordable home, compared to SF prices.

The traffic problems in Seattle are horrible. You can get around in Portland just about anytime of day, easier than you can in Seattle.
