Why do womens names in Poland end in "A" then "I" or "ski". Help Please.?

Why do womens names in Poland end in "A" then "I" or "ski". Help Please.?

Because, like Latin, Polish is a language that assigns gender to words.

Meaning, there are words in Polish that are female words, words that are male and words that are neutral, or neuter, being neither male nor female.

Each type of word has an ending on it that tells you whether it's male, female or neuter.

The "a" at the end of a woman's name tells you immediately, this is a woman's name, not a man's, regardless of whether or not the first name seems confusing to you or even if you don't know the person's first name.

ie: Jakub Swiatwicki has a wife, named Basia, and her name is Basia Swiatwicka.

Sometimes the ending letter isn't a vowel, but a consonant. But it works the same way ie: The word "student" is boy student in Polish but the word "studentk" means girl student.

she just told u bout the gender thing while its more complex
u asked sth else n u chose the answer that isnt what u asked for (not in 100%) Report It

its never SKI for a woman - in this situation its cos of gender
but when we deal w/women (we know the noun is femin.) then its bout declension n inflection DUH
but ok u know better :P Report It

Not only Poland, also Russia, Czech republic, Slovakia and so on.
It indicates that she is female, for example:
Mr. Kral - Mrs. Kralova...Mr. Sikora - Mrs. Sikorova...Mr. Steffl - Mrs. Stefflova (Czech versions).
These work equally in the other countries just with other endings.

if u wonder why one surname/name changes the suffix then the answer is cos of our grammar rules (n it doesnt apply to womens names only):
Declension, Inflection and Conjugation are crucial here
examples r here:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Polish:Femi...
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:P...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_lang...

a short example:
lets take a surname Kowalska
nom. is Kowalska but when i want to ask a question "have u seen Kowalska" i have to change the suffix in the name so it looks different i wud say "have u seen Kowalsk膮?" and the person wud answer "no i havent seen Kowalskiej"
so as u see there is a huge variation of suffixes

our grammar is very complex n often difficult for foreigners who arent familiar w/Slavic langs

check these sites too:
http://www.polishgrammar.com/Polish-Gram... (go to the Tables there, there are good examples n explanation there)
http://www.polish-translators.com/zaimki...

also depending on a gender u change the suffixes too
so if a man's surname is Kowalski then his wife is Kowalska
('i' stands for a man n 'a' points its a woman)
but u didnt ask bout the gender differences in grammar but bout fem. =)

u also change suffixes when u want to create diminutive and Polish lang is very rich as for creating different forms of words, as for women, if we take a name Anna u can say: Ania, Aneczka, Aniusia and so on and so forth but if u get angry w/ur Anna u may call her for instance Anucha =)
