According to the CIA World Factbook it is: 38,518,241 as an estimate for July 2007.

It is quite difficult to give an exact number because of the mass emigration of many young and middle aged citizens since Poland joined the EU. Furthermore, there are many Polish ex-pats (known as "Polonia") who have lived abroad for many generations, but still keep very strong identity links with Poland, for example, the American Poles living in Chicago. Such Poles may still have voting rights etc.

People seem to accept that the population is shrinking, due to factors such as emigration and a low birth rate; in Poland, there are very many single child families.
